К системе социального обеспечения в США относятся следующие программы: 1) страхование по возрасту и потере кормиль­ца. Учреждена первоначально в соответствии с Законом о социальном обеспечении (1935) как Программа страхования лиц пожилого возраста. В 1939 г. в число охваченных про­граммой вошли лица, потерявшие кормиль­цев. Она обеспечивает выплату денежных пенсий ушедшим на пенсию работникам, членам их семей, имеющим право на соци­альное обеспечение, а также застрахованным нетрудоспособным работникам; 2) страхова­ние по нетрудоспособности (1956), которое обеспечивает выплату денежных пособий нетрудоспособным работникам и членам их семей; 3) медицинская программа "Меди-кэр" (1965), которая помогает оплачивать расходы, связанные с пребыванием в госпита­ле и медицинским уходом за пожилыми и нетрудоспособными людьми. Благодаря по­правкам к первоначальному законодательст­ву сфера страхования и уровень выплат посо­бий с течением времени увеличивались. В настоящее время практически все виды работ охвачены страхованием. Более 36 млн чело­век получают пенсии и пособия по социаль­ному страхованию. По этому виду страхова­ния получают доход более 90 % домохозяйств пожилых людей (С. Грэд, 1984).
