Notes

The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) was founded in 1948. One of its first concerns was the development of an ethical code so that its members would have behavioural guidelines, managements would have a clear understanding of standards and professionals in public relations would be distinguished from shady promoters and ballyhoo advance men.

The PRSA Code of Professional Standards for the Practice of Public Relations was adopted in 1950 and strengthened by successive revisions.

The PRSA Ethics Board currently investigates about 15 to 20 cases annually involving a possible violation of ethics and professional practice, but almost every one comes to a “dead end” with no action taken. The Primary reason for this is that PRSA is a voluntary organisation that doesn’t have quasi-legal power to subpoena witnesses, order presentation of evidence, or even fine individuals for refusing to cooperate fully.

The International Association of Business Communicators was founded in 1970. Its code of ethics was adopted in 1985 and has been changed several times since then. The code is based on the principles that professional communication is not only legal and ethical but is also in good taste and sensitive to cultural values and beliefs. Members are encouraged to be truthful, accurate, and fair in all their communications. If a member is conducting his/her professional activities contrary to the code, the usual procedure is to have an informal conversation with the offender and point out the areas of the code being violated.

IABC includes sessions on ethics at its annual meetings, conducts workshops on ethics and encourages chapters to include ethics discussions in their local programs.
