7. Problem Solving

Pace Industries, a manufacturer of cordless phones, has a morale problem among its 1200 employees. There is a widespread rumor that the company will lay off from one third to one half of its employees. The rumor apparently started because of two environmental factors: (1) many news stories in recent years have reported the downsizing of corporate America, and (2) the company recently lost the bid on a major contract.

The rumor is false, and Pace executives are worried that it will affect productivity and cause and exodus of valued employees. What steps should the company take to refute the rumor and reassure employees that their jobs are secure? What kinds of messages and communication channels should be used?

Plugola is another term for product placement. It consists of two parts: the noun a plug, which means the favorable mention of something or the advertisement and the suffix –ola, which is used in coinages that have the general sense of bribery, especially covert payments to an entertainment figure in return for promoting a product.
