Wire Editing in the Virtuoso XL Layout Editor

Connectivity source requirements are the same as those for the Virtuoso XL.

Routing Area Boundary

The routing area boundary is used to confine the routing to a designated area. By default a boundary is generated by the Gen From Source command. You can also draw a boundary using the Create – Rectangle command. When creating a boundary you can specify a routing area boundary per layer, which allows areas of a cellview to be used only by that layer.

For information about defining a boundary layer for a specific routing layer, refer to“Defining Boundary Layers” in the Virtuoso Custom Placement and Routing Preparation Guide.

For more information about drawing a boundary, refer to “Defining the Design Boundary” on page 149.

Enabling Wire Editing

To enable wire editing, do the following:

1.Start Virtuoso XL.

For information about starting Virtuoso XL, refer to Chapter 7, “Generating Your Layout with Virtuoso XL Layout Editor.”

2.From the layout design window, choose Options – Layout XL.

The Layout XL Options form appears.

3.Turn on Enable Wire Editing.

Wire editing is enabled and the additional wire editing commands are available.

You can also enable wire editing each time you start Virtuoso XL by setting the environment variable to true in your .cdsenv file:

layout wireEdit boolean t

or by setting the environment variable to true in your .cdsinit file:

envSetVal("layout" "wireEdit" 'boolean t)

Note: If the rules file is not defined or the rule information is not specified in your technology file, when you enable the wire editing a warning message will be sent to the

Command Interpreter Window:

icclayers are not defined

You must point to a rules file or a technology file with the rule information and enable wire editing again.

Toggling Between Virtuoso XL and Wire Editing Enabled

Use the j bindkey to toggle between Virtuoso XL and the wire editing enabled setting.

The j bindkey is available through the Virtuoso XL lxBindKeys.il file. You can find the bindkey file at the following location:
