My Future Profession
My future profession is that of a doctor. I like it, because it is the most noble and humane profession. It is one of the oldest professions on earth. I‘ve dreamed of becoming a doctor since my childhood. So after leaving school I entered the Kursk State Medical University and in some years my cherished dream will come true. What can be more noble and humane than protecting the health of people, combatting diseases and preventing them, relieving the sufferings of the sick and saving their lives? We understand that to prevent diseases is not less important than to combat them, because the main principle (therefore the motto) of medicine is "Prevention is better than cure".
It is no easy matter to study at a Medical University. We must study a lot of medical subjects before mastering a complicated art of treating sick people and protecting their health. At our University many experienced specialists share their skills and experience with us and help us to become highly-skilled therapeutists, surgeons, neuropathologists, oculists, ear-nose-and-throat specialists and so on. It goes without saying how important it is to have a thorough knowledge of medical subjects to become good doctors. That is why students must study hard, must do their best to master medicine and to acquire profound knowledge of medical specialities. Our University trains highly-qualified specialists and I am proud of it.
But professional knowledge is not enough to become a good doctor. Only a good person may become a good doctor. To be a good doctor means to be honest, unselfish, industrious, attentive to other people when it is necessary. Love for man and optimism are the most important features of a doctor.
A doctor is a person who can not only diagnose, but who can read what is in the person's heart. A doctor is a man who always has an affectionate word for everybody. He must absorb the pain tormenting people. A doctor must do his best to win the confidence of a patient. No matter what specialist I shall become, a surgeon or a therapeutist, a children's doctor or an oculist I shall do my utmost to become a specialist very necessary and very helpful to people.
All future doctors should remember the words of the Hippocratic Oath: "I shall enter any house for the good of the patient. I shall not do my patient any harm".
Not only by the Drugs
The present demands to the doctor are very high. It goes without saying that the doctor of today must be a highly-qualified specialist. He must be good at the methods of diagnostics and treatment, capable of using diagnostic and medical equipment in his work. But this isn't all. Greatly mistaken is a doctor thinking "I've diagnosed the case, administered the proper treatment, all the rest is the patient himself - he must do his utmost to recover".
A psychological influence of a doctor upon a patient is of great importance for the successful result of a correctly performed operation, for the effectiveness of medication and for the prevention of complications. Care, attention, sharing the patient's sufferings - these are not only the features of medical ethics, but a very powerful remedy as well.
Socrates bore this in his mind when saying the following words "It's impossible to cure the body without healing the soul".
