USB System Architecture
The advantage of a hybrid implementation is that it is possible to differentiate between an unpowered hub and a disconnected hub or connected but apparently broken hub.
In Figure 4-5, the dotted line labeled “upstream power” illustrates the option of powering the hub controller electronics with bus power.
Current Limiting
Figure 4-5 also illustrates current limiting implemented in a ganged fashion. Since the current limit is 5.0a per port, the current limiter must trip when the current draw reaches the 5.0a limit. If, for example, a self-powered hub supports ten ports in conjunction with one current limiter, the total legal current draw on each of the ten ports (500ma) would exceed the maximum current. As a result, a ten port hub might be implemented with two current limiters, each providing protection for a group of five ports.
