Chapter 4: USB Cable Power Distribution

Hubs may also incorporate optional features for each port, such as LEDs, to indicate which ports are powered and/or enabled.

Power During Configuration

Figure 4-5 on page 88 illustrates a basic block diagram of a self-powered hub. The hub must include a 1.5Kpullup resistor on its D+ data lines to identify itself as a full-speed device. The system, having detected the device’s attachment, must access its descriptors to determine the device type. This requires access to the hub controller’s control endpoint so that the hub’s descriptors can be read.

Locally Powered Bus Interface

A self-powered hub may power its host controller solely from its local supply. Consequently, if the hub is not plugged into AC, the 1.5Kresistor on the D+ line may not have Vcc available and device (hub) when attached will not be detected by the system. This could be highly confusing to the end user who fully expects all USB devices to work automatically when attached.

It is also possible that the pullup resistor is powered by the bus, but that the hub controller is powered by the local supply. In this instance device attachment would be detected, but host attempts to read the device descriptors would fail. Specifically, host generated accesses to the default endpoint would result in no response from the hub. The host would detect the error condition but have no idea what caused the failure.

The dotted line in Figure 4-5 on page 88, running between the local supply and the hub controller electronics, illustrates the option of powering the bus interface using the local power supply.

Hybrid Powered Device

A self-powered hub may power the entire bus interface and hub controller function via the USB cable, making it possible to detect the hub’s attachment and read its descriptors. Power for embedded functions and each port, however, would be obtained from the local supply. This is termed a “hybrid” powered hub. “Hybrid” powered hubs, like any USB device, must draw no more than 100ma of current from the cable during configuration.
