Self-Powered Hubs
Hubs may be incorporated into other USB devices that have their own power supplies, such as monitors, or be designed as stand-alone hubs with their own supplies. The obvious advantage to self-powered hubs is that they can supply the full 500ma of current to each of their downstream USB ports. The obvious disadvantages include added complexity and cost when compared to bus-pow- ered versions. Self-powered hubs also require current limiting (5.0a/port) to meet the safety requirements defined by the specification.
