Exercises.

I. Define the form of the infinitives: to do, to be done, to be speaking, to have been played, to have been written, to be standing, to have seen, to have been living, to be loved, to have succeeded, to have been dined, to be recognized, to have been learning.

II. Make the following infinitives Passive, if possible: to make, to see, to be doing, to have given, to have gone, to have been writing, to be thinking, to love, to marry, to have meant, to be standing, to tell, to discuss, to have driven.

III. Make the following infinitives Perfect Active and Passive, if possible: to see, to hear, to be locking, to know, to be living, to wait, to drive, to observe, to tell, to dance, to come, to intend, to be singing, to inform, to watch, to say.

IV. State the form of infinitive in the following sentences. Translate them into Russian.

  1. I’d like to know what you are doing.

  2. He is the only man to be trusted.

  3. This is a funny story to be laughed at.

  4. He wanted to come back by the end of the week.

  5. They were expected to have arrived some days earlier.

  6. He is supposed to be delivering a lecture for 2 hours.

  7. You may not have heard about this exhibition.

  8. He is not likely to be coming.

  9. She was know to have been living in England since her childhood.

  10. The teacher gave us the task which should be done in time.

  11. The boys don’t want to be sent to the army.

  12. The problem must have been settled.

  13. I know him to be a talented singer.

  14. All he wanted was to write the book and not to be forgotten.

  15. She put on a new dress to look more attractive and to be admired by everyone.

V. Use the infinitives in brackets in the required form.

  1. He wanted (to come back) by the end of the week.

  2. It’s so kind of you (to buy) tickets in advance.

  3. The girl pretended (to read) a book.

  4. We are very glad (to invite) to your party.

  5. He will be pleased (to meet) you.

  6. I can’t remember ever (to see) him.

  7. I don’t want you (to explain) anything.

  8. She is said (to work out) a new program.

  9. He seemed (to study) me.

  10. I thought you were working I couldn’t (to disturb).

  11. He was unable (to move) a finger as he seemed greatly (to move) by their story.

  12. They were said (to date) for a long time.

  13. He is the man (to be responsible) for everything I (to punish) for all the faults.

  14. They are not likely (to come) at that late hour.

  15. She seems (to say) everything she has (to say).

VI. Insert the particle “to” where necessary.

  1. I’d rather ... explain you everything.
