Exercises

I. Find the objective participle constructions. Translate the sentences into Russian.

1. In the silence I could hear my heart beating. 2. We noticed him standing behind the corner of the house. 3. We had it all planed. 4. As the girl was playing the piano she felt the music teacher’s eyes fastened on her hands. 5. Mike saw his mother standing in the doorway. 6. I found the door unlocked. 7. I heard some people talking in the distance. 8. She could hear him speaking on the phone. 9. The girl heard her name mentioned. 10. I heard the key turned in the door lock.

II. Find the subjective participle constructions. Translate the sentences into Russian.

1. He was seen playing in the yard. 2. The mother’s voice was heard calling from the next room. 3. He had a heart disease and was often seen taking tablets. 4. They were found speaking to a stranger. 5. He was often seen walking alone along the street. 6. They were heard leaving the country for good. 7. Jane was heard marring a foreigner. 8. The boys were seen playing football in the school yard. 9. She was thought hiding something in her bag. 10. They were seen talking to each other angrily.

III. Find nominative absolute participle constructions in the following sentences. Define the functions. Translate the sentences into Russian.

1. She turned, her eyes sparkling with indignation. 2. The man lit a cigarette, his hands trembling. 3. It being a hot day, she suggested that we should go to the country. 4. The work finished, we could have some short rest. 5. The door bell ringing, she rose and left the room. 6. He gone, she stood for a wile in the hall. 7. She saw the blood spots on his shirt, her eyes widening with horror. 8. Exams being so close, he started to worry. 9. Everybody at home were busy, the mother cooking, the father reading a book, the children playing in their room. 10. They walked silently, she weeping bitterly.

IV. Paraphrase the following sentences, using participle constructions instead of adverbial clauses.

1. As the sun was shining, we decided to have a walk in the park. 2. He was speaking and his voice was trembling. 3. She was looking at him and her eyes were full of tears. 4. They considered that their plan had been lost. 5. When I entered the room I found that she had been already dressed for the party. 6. AS it was an early hour, I didn’t dare to knock at her door. 7. When the working day was over, we decided to go to the cinema. 8. Something was new in the appearance. We understood that she had cut her hair short. 9. As the night was very calm and warm we didn’t want to go home. 10. When the moment had come he found it difficult to speak.

V. Paraphrase the following sentences, using adverbial clauses instead of participle constructions.

1. I saw them swimming in the ocean. 2. She opened the door, her face smiling towards him. 3. I found him absorbed in detective novels. 4. Lesson over, we went to the library. 5. He was sitting in the chair, with his eyes fixed on the wall. 6. She walking along the corridor, the book in her hands. 7. The hour being late, the streets were empty. 8. Preliminary remarks being over, we can now discuss the deal. 9. I watched the couples dancing around. 10. We found John waiting for us near the metro-station.
