Всі дієслова, крім модальних, набувають закінчення -s або -es для 3 особи однини. He swims, she runs, it sleeps, the dog barks При цьому слід дотримуватися наступних правил орфографії: 1. Дієслово 3 особи однини набуває закінчення – es якщо закінчується на ● -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, -o ►es I go – she goes I kiss – he kisses I wash - he washes we watch – he watches we fix – he fixes ● приголосний + y ► es, при цьому ‘y’ змінюється на ‘i’ I copy - he copies I try - he tries I fly - he flies
2. Якщо дієслово закінчується на голосний + y ► s, то 'y', не змінюється і додається закінчення –s, як і у всіх інших випадках. say – says buy – buys destroy – destroys

1. Якщо дієслово в інфінітиві закінчується на • німий - e, то цей голосний опускається і додається закінчення - ing. make - making, dictate – dictating, advise - advising, argue – arguing
2. Якщо дієслово складається з одного складу і закінчується на один приголосний з попереднім коротким голосним звуком, то при додаванні закінчення -ing кінцевий приголосний подвоюється. sit – sitting, put – putting plan – planning, run - running Порівняйте: hop – hopping, але hope - hoping; tap – tapping але tape – taping 3. Якщо дієслово в інфінітиві закінчується на -ie, то • -ie змінюється на ► -y + ing die - dying tie - tying lie - lying
4. Якщо дієслово складається з двох складів і наголос падає на • другий склад, то кінцевий приголосний подвоюється і додається закінчення -ing. be'gin - beginning, refer - referring, omit - omitting • перший склад, то ніяких змін не відбувається, тільки додається закінчення -ing. ′offer - offering, listen - listening, open - opening, differ - differing 5. Якщо слово закінчується на ‘l’, то незалежно від наголосу ця буква подвоюється.* control - controlling cancel – cancelling travel – travelling * (Am.E.) travel-traveling |
При утворенні -ed форм слід дотримуватися наступних правил орфографії: 1. Якщо дієслово в інфінітиві закінчується на • німий - e, то цей голосний опускається і додається закінчення -ed. live - lived, dance – danced • приголосний + y ► i + ed, ‘y’ змінюється на i’ і додається закінчення ‘ed’: try - tried, modify - modified Якщо ж перед ‘y’ - голосний, то ‘y’ зберігається: stay - stayed, play - played 2. Якщо дієслово складається з одного складу і закінчується на один приголосний з попереднім коротким голосним звуком, то кінцевий приголосний подвоюється. rob - robbed, plan - planned, stop - stopped, shop - shopped 3. Якщо дієслово складається з двох або більше складів і наголос падає на останній склад з коротким голосним звуком, то кінцевий приголосний подвоюється. per'mit - permitted 4. Якщо слово закінчується на ‘l’, то незалежно від того, чи падає наголос на останній склад чи ні, ‘l’ подвоюється.* quarrel - quarrelled travel – travelled
