Economic Potential and Industry of Kharkiv
Kharkiv is one of the largest centers of Ukrainian industry. Among the cities of the CIS it is only second to Moscow and St. Petersburg.
There are 500 big industrial enterprises in the city. The leading role in the structure of its industrial potential belongs to mechanical engineering and metalworking, electrical power engineering, and production of construction materials. Machine building and metalworking and especially production of tractors and agricultural machines, power engineering and electric machine building, production of control equipment and machine tools form the most highly developed branches of its industry. There are more than 80 machine building and metalworking plants in Kharkiv. Kharkiv is the first in Ukraine and the second in CIS countries in production of turbines, generators and equipment for power stations.
The products of Kharkiv enterprises are well known in Ukraine and abroad. Specialists from Kharkiv have greatly contributed to rocket engineering and exploration of space. The control systems for carrier rockets and space vehicles as well as several generations of rocket systems developed by researchers and engineering specialists from Kharkiv are well known in the world. The systems constitute the basis of the national space program.
Metalworking of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, power engineering, wood-working, chemical and pharmacy industries provide for the needs of the leading branches of economy and the city itself.
Kharkiv holds the leading place in Ukraine in producing items of textiles and knitted fabrics, shoes, leather and fur goods. The joint-stock company “Tynyakov factory” is the most productive of all the ready-made clothes enterprises in the city. At the beginning of 1995 in Kharkiv there were some 6,690 enterprises representing small and middle-scale business and making a considerable contribution to the development of the city's infrastructure.
Production of oils and fats, milk and dairy products, bread-baking and producing of pastry and confectionery, brewing and other branches of food industry are also highly developed in Kharkiv.
