I Am a Would-Be Manager of Hospitality Industry
I am a first year student of Kharkiv Trade and Economy College. My future specialty is manager of hospitality industry. This industry is concerned with the accommodation of people away from home (provision of places to stay), provision of fare (food at table), transportation (travelling and tours), and recreation (relaxation and entertainment).
This profession is rather new at our educational establishment. Advanced technology of the XXI century has brought great changes to hospitality industry. People expect a wide range of accommodations and rates: B&B (Bed and Breakfast, a rate that combines a night’s accommodation with a breakfast the following day), American plan (a rate that includes three meals a day), and European plan (accommodation – only rate, no meal). People also expect a wide range of dining choices: from full-service restaurants (restaurants that cook to order more than a dozen main course items) to cafeterias (self-service restaurants where food is displayed on a counter and guests can pick what they like). Our century created fast food industry (quick-service restaurants that offer limited menus) and a great variety of tourist and leisure facilities, both commercial and non-commercial.
Besides, my future profession will be connected with mass tourism. Tourism is a growing industry and one of the largest sources of foreign exchange. The number of tourists increases steadily. Many people are interested in churches and monasteries with ancient frescoes, ancient folklore and long-lasting traditions. Others like modern theatres and museums that are famous all over the world. So they want to travel and I could help them to get only positive emotions.
Nowadays, the interest in ecology and conservation is growing. Ecotourism offers wide varieties of landscapes and activities, including unspoiled beaches and coral reefs for scuba-diving enthusiasts, mountain biking, climbing; rainforest areas with undeveloped islands and jungle, swamp-tracks, sailing, rafting – all of these attract tourists. Air travel and hitchhiking are the two extremes of travel. Travelling by boat, rail, coach and car are the traditional means of travelling. So I, as a manager, should provide transportation to all – the extreme and traditional travellers.
Being the manager in such field of industry needs some special skills – such as conceptual, administrative and human relations skills.
