§ 8. THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION

Our country, Russia, is one of the largest countries in the world. It occupies a vast expanse of Eastern Europe and northern Asia. With an area of 17 million square kilometers, it stretches for almost 10 000 kilometers from east to west and 5 000 kilometers from north to south.

The Russian Federation borders upon a great number of countries. In the south-east it borders North Korea, China and Mongolia, in the north-west - Norway and Finland, and Georgia and Azerbaijan in the south.

The population of Russia is about 150 million people. The great majority of the people are Russians, but there also are some 70 smaller national groups.

The capital of Russia is Moscow. The foundation of Moscow dates from the year 1147. Moscow is a city with a peculiarly Russian character due to its unique cultural heritage and history. It is the political, economic center of the country with the population of about 10 million people. Red Square of Moscow and the Kremlin symbolize Russia for millions of people both in our country and abroad. The majority of people think that Moscow is the official and economical capital of the country and St. Petersburg is thought to be the northern and cultural capital of Russia.

There is no other country in which the climate differs so much from one part to another. When it is still winter in the northern regions of our country the first warm days arrive in the south. In the same season nature looks different in different parts of our country.

There is an enormous variety of landforms and landscapes. Our country is also famous for its rivers and lakes, for example Volga and Yenisey, Baikal and Ladoga. We also posses thick forests, vast tracts of fertile arable land and fine pastures. The Russian Federation is rich in oil, coal, iron, gold, silver and other minerals.

Russia is a Presidential Republic according to the Constitution adopted in 1991. The head of the state is the President. The executive branch is represented by the President and the Government which is headed by the Prime Minister. The legislative branch is represented by Duma. The Symbol of Russia is a three- colored flag with three horizontal stripes: white, blue and red. White represents Peace, blue represents Loyalty and red - Valor. The Emblem of Russia is a double-headed eagle, the ancient symbol going back to the dynasty of the Riuricovitches.
