Higher education plays an important part in the life of any country. It trains people to become teachers, engineers, doctors and other professional workers. There are several faculties in a university and each faculty has a number of specialized departments headed by dean. The course of studies lasts 4-5 years.
The academic year in higher schools begins on the 1-st of September and is divided into two terms (semesters). Students take exams at the end of each semester. If the results of the examinations are good, students get grants. Twice a year students have vacations- two weeks in winter and two months in summer.
About 50 percent of students can receive state grants. Universities have their own students’ hostels or Students’ houses and some of them have large and excellent sport centers.
My University has several buildings, old and new ones. There are many various laboratories, computer classes, lecture halls. There is a very good library and a computer center in the main building.
Every faculty has its own specialized library, laboratories, workshops and computer centers.
The first – and second – year students study general engineering subjects. In the third year students begin to study specialized subjects.
A very good tradition of our University is that theory is accompanied by practical training. Students begin to work at the University’s well- equipped laboratories and in senior years at various plants, design offices and research institutes of this country.
It is interesting but difficult to study at our University, especially for the first – year students as they do not know yet how to organize their work and time.

When do the students take the exams?

The 'Star of Education'
Like many precious diamonds,
Good teachers are hard to find
Yet sometimes one can discover
A rare and priceless kind,
It’s not like all the others
For it out-shines the rest
You know as soon as you see it
That this stone is the best,
A good teacher is that special gem
They do far more than teach
They make you feel, through learning,
There’s no star you cannot reach
In Art, they help you see differently
From new angles, not straight up and down
They make Geography an adventure
As the world you travel around
In History, they make you feel
You’ve lived and breathed the times
And Math is not sums, but puzzles
To stretch and tone your mind
In English they encourage you
To not just write, but feel
So that each one of your stories
Will read as if it were real,
If you ever have a question
You call and they are there
With patience and understanding
Your problems are theirs, they care
There’s usually one in every school
Superior to the rest
For they’re the ‘Star of Education’
And as such are totally priceless!
