The respiratory system
Respiration occurs in all living things, both plants and animals. Proper functioning of this system is the single and most important factor in the sustaining life. Interruption of breathing for only a few minutes by suffocation or strangulation causes death.
In the human organism respiration consists of those process by which the body cells and tissues make use of oxygen and by which carbon dioxide or the waste products of respiration are removed.
Air is breathed through either the mouth or nose into the oral cavity or pharynx. It then passes through the voice box or larynx into the windpipe or trachea. The trachea divides into two smaller tubes called the bronchi, one is going to each lung. The bronchi divide into tiny passage-ways that are named bronchioles, which lead to minute air sacs or alveoli.

The stomach
Man's stomach is a simple organ compared with the complicated stomachs of the cow and other animals. The human stomach is a swollen part of the alimentary canal, just below the esophagus. The shape of the stomach changes with the amount of food which it contains. When the stomach is nearly empty it is flattened and tubelike. When filled with food it may be swollen considerably. Food enters the stomach at the upper end from the esophagus. It is moved along by the powerful muscles of the stomach. When the food reaches the pyloric end of the stomach, it is stopped by a ring of muscles located at the outlet of the stomach, called the sphincter. The sphincter opens only at certain intervals when the food is ready to be passed on to the intestine.
The time taken to empty the stomach varies with different individuals and according to the type of food eaten. Water requires no preparation by the stomach. Therefore the sphincter lets water through almost immediately as soon as it enters the stomach. When the food comes into the stomach it contains ptyalin, which is a digestive juice formed from the saliva.
