Grammar: Revision of non-finite forms (2)

There are three types of non-finite verb forms:

1) Infinitive with or without to

2) Gerund (-ing form)

3) Participle

The difference between finite and non-finite verb forms is that finite verb forms have tense and can occur as the verb of a main clause, while non-finite verbs don't and can't.

They went without telling us. (went = finite verb form, telling = non-finite verb form)

Having visited the meeting she hurried to the hospital. (hurried = finite verb form, having visited = non-finite verb form)

• Герундію може передувати прийменник:

І am fond of reading.

• Герундію може передувати присвійний

відмінок іменника чи займенника:

І like Victor's (his) reading.

• Може вживатися у реченні у функції

- підмета: Reading is my hobby.

- додатка: I like reading science fiction.

- предикатива: My dream is reading his latest novel.

• Вживається у функції означення чи обставини

(завжди герундію передує прийменник):

Before reading a book І take a copy-book to make notes.

• He вживається для утворення часів групи Continuous.

• Дієприкметнику прийменник нe передує:

Не sat reading the magazine.

• Дієприкметнику цей відмінок не передує:

Не sat reading Victor's (his) notes.

• Не вживається у реченні у функції

підмета, додатка, предикатива.

• Вживається у функції

- означення: Reading a book I make notes.

- обставини: І like to work in the reading room.

• Вживається для утворення часів групи Continuous: Не is reading a book now.
