The Article (Артикль)
В английском языке существуют два артикля: неопределенный a (an) и определенный the.
Неопределенный артикль a (an) (форма an употребляется перед существительными, которые начинаются с гласной: an article) произошел от древнеанглийского числительного ān что означает один (one).
There is a table in the room. —
He is a student.
В восклицательных предложениях типа: What a day! – Что за день!, Such a fool!
As a rule; it’s a shame; in a hurry; at a loss; it’s a pity, etc.
В словосочетаниях to have a bite, to have a smoke, to have a shower неопределенный артикль указывает на однократность и непродолжительность выполняемого действия – перекусить (по сравнению с «есть, кушать»), покурить (по сравнению с «курить»), принять душ (по сравнению с «принимать душ»).
If you have read the book, give it to me.
а) порядковое числительное – the second chance,
в) слова following, last, next, same, very, only.
2. Перед названиями известных культурных и исторических ценностей – the Kremlin, the British Museum, the Tower.
Show me the jacket you have bought.
The Volga, the Canaries, the Urals.
5. С названиями сторон света (the South), уникальных явлений (the sun, the Earth, the sky).
The rose is a flower.
7. Перед собирательными существительными, отражающими принадлежность к одной семье (the Ivanovs), нации, национальности (the Russian), а также перед собирательными существительными, образованными от прилагательных и наречий (the poor, the wounded).
Little girl!
