В этой роли существительное обязательно стоит после глагола-связки, чаще всего глагола to be, например:

3. Дополнение
В этой роли существительное стоит после сказуемого и бывает прямым или косвенным:
а) прямое дополнение (кого? что?) обычно употребляется без предлога, например:
I like the girl.
Некоторые английские глаголы с прямым дополнением (без предлога) в русском переводе требуют предлог, например:
I followed the doctor. — Я последовал за врачом.
б) косвенное дополнение (кому? чему?) обычно выражается существительным с предлогом и может находиться как после сказуемого, так и после прямого дополнения:
Не gave the textbooks to his friend.
4. Обстоятельство
В этой роли существительное всегда используется с предлогом, обычно с определенным артиклем и может находиться в начале или в конце предложения, например:
His car is in the garage.
5. Определение
Существительное в роли определения может употребляться:
а) с предлогом — после определяемого слова и может соответствовать русскому прилагательному или существительному, например:
a book of interest, discussions оf this type
6) без предлога — перед определяемым существительным (после артикля) и тоже может соответствовать русскому прилагательному, например:
a table lamp, a school fellow
Примечание
Однако иногда перевод существительного прилагательным может привести к ошибке, например:
car door — дверь машины, а не машинная дверь
table leg — ножка стола, а не столовая ножка.
Обратите внимание на то, что существительное в роли определения обычно используется в единственном числе, но это не значит, что имеется в виду только один предмет, например:
a book case — шкаф для книг, а не шкаф для одной книги.
Иногда два существительных пишутся слитно (или через дефис), особенно если они короткие и часто употребляются вместе, например:
tea-party — званый чай
raincoat — плащ
tea-leaf — чайный лист
homework — домашняя работа.
Существительных в роли определения может быть больше, чем одно, — целый ряд. Перевод во всех случаях надо начинать с последнего слова в ряду и устанавливать логические связи, например:
The Moscow region medical establishments’ presentation was organized in Moscow. — Презентация медицинских учреждений Московской области была организована в Москве.

В английском языке, как и в русском, существует несколько способов образования новых слов. Самым продуктивным является словообразование посредством присоединения суффикса (к концу слова) и префикса (к началу слова).
