Lesson 3

Content Focus

Task 1. Ask 3-4 students to present the information about the companies’ history they found as a home task. (The whole activity should not exceed 10 minutes).

A teacher should hand out the milestone lists of any Ukrainian publishing companies and your reports written by students as a home assignment at the beginning of the next lesson, checked and commented on by him/her.

Task 2. Hand out students’ organisational structure chart descriptions written by them as a home assignment for the previous time, checked and commented on by you. After students look through the comments made by the teacher on organisational structure chart descriptions, they may ask you some questions. If students ask you questions that require lengthy explanations, ask them to approach you individually after class.

Task 3. To be organized exactly as stated in the Student’s Book. The whole activity should not exceed 10 minutes

Task 4. To be organized exactly as stated in the Student’s Book. It is very important that students understand the meaning of all financial terms for future work on this Unit.

Task 6. Suggested answers:

  • profit – money that you gain by selling things or doing business, after your costs have been paid;

  • sale – when you sell something, the total number of products that are sold during a particular period of time;

  • layout – the way in which writing and pictures are arranged on a page;

  • freelancer – someone who works independently for different companies rather than being employed by one particular company

  • gain – to obtain or achieve something you want or need;

  • quantity – an amount of something that can be counted or measured;

  • distributor – a company or person that supplies shops and companies with goods;

  • pursue – to continue doing an activity or trying to achieve something over a long period of time.

Task 7. Suggested answers:

  1. According to the author of the article, publishing is fundamentally a business.

  2. In many companies, editing, proofreading, layout, design and other aspects of the production process are done by freelancers.

  3. No, dedicated in-house salespeople are sometimes replaced by companies who specialize in sales to bookshops, wholesalers and chain stores for a fee.

  4. Yes, retail book chains and supermarkets have centralized their buying.

  5. Similarly, the trade usually sells the finished products through a distributor who stores and distributes the publisher's wares for a percentage fee or sells on a sale or return basis.
