Lesson 3

Task 13. Now your teacher will hand out the reports, consultation notes written by you as a home assignment for the previous time, checked and commented on. After you look through the comments made by the teacher on your organisational structure chart descriptions, ask him/her questions if you do not quite understand or have doubts about some comments.

Task 14. Hand in your letters to Johannes Gutenberg written as a home assignment to your teacher for checking and grading.

Your teacher will hand out the letters written by you as a home assignment at the next class, checked and commented on. After you look through the comments made by the teacher on your own summary, ask him/her questions if you do not quite understand or have doubts about some comments.

Task 15. Present the information about Printing press of 1811. Do not exceed 3-minutes’ limit for your presentation.

Task 16. Module Assessment. Your teacher will give your Module Assessment papers (You have 45 minutes for all the tasks).

MODULE 4

UNIT 7. BOOK STRUCTURE AND DESIGN

STUDENT’S BOOK

LESSON 1

Content Focus

Task 1. Book structure is not a very simple question as it may sound, it is a rather complicated matter. When reading books we do not even think about how many parts it has, how it was made, which materials were used. But when we start asking these questions we may find out a lot of new things. Read the text below and answer the following questions (You have 15 minutes for this task):

  1. Which book parts do you consider to be the most important?

  2. Which book parts do you think are the most easy to do/produce?

  3. Which book part do you think people pay the least attention to?

Parts of a book

M ost books will have at least a front and back cover, title page, and body text but usually there will be many more parts of a book design. Let’s explore the physical components of hardcover and softcover books as well as the design elements that make up the text portion of most books.

1. The Text Block or Book Block is everything between the covers of the book including the endpapers. It is composed of pages, leaves, sheets, and signatures. Each printed page of the text block contains an area known as the type page – the area of a printed page excluding non-printing areas (margins, gutter) as well as some printed areas including headers, footers, and page numbers.

2. Front Matter. So called because it is all the material that appears at the front of the book, before you reach the actual body content, the front matter may be as simple as a single title page or table of contents or it could have multiple title pages, a detailed table of contents, and several pages for the preface and foreword.

3. Body of the Book. The body of the book is where you'll find the story, the description and the main text of the book. This is the main portion of the publication. In longer books and manuals the body is often sub-divided into chapters or sections.

4. End of the Book Components. The number and type of sections that follow the final chapter vary by the type of book. Technical publications generally have more of these end of the book components including an index and an appendix.

5. Case Components and Book Binding. A basic knowledge of the parts of a book and how a book is put together can help the designer envision the finished product. The boards, spine, and cover material make up the case which is created separate from the text block and attached to it.

(The text is borrowed and modified from http://desktoppub.about.com/od/booksmanuals/a/book_parts.htm: as of 20 January 2012)

Task 2. Look at the pictures below. You can see parts of a book with titles. With the help of this scheme and the glossary match the book parts with the definitions below (You have 10 minutes for this task).

  1. Headband

  1. The bottom part of the book.

  1. Tail

  1. A small groove where the books boards are attached to the book and bends when the book is opened. (The exterior junction of the covers and spine of a book, also known as the gutter.)

  1. Spine

  1. A decorative cloth band, sometimes coloured or multi-coloured, appearing inside the back strip at the top (and sometimes bottom) of the spine of a book.

  1. Paste-down endpaper

  1. The part of a book’s cover which wraps over the back of the book. (also called the Backstrip or Spine Cover) The surface of a book that usually faces outward when a book sits on a shelf.

  1. Endpapers

  1. The front and back covers of a book, sometimes they are called the books boards.

  1. Joint

  1. The trimmed edge that is opposite of the spine and can sometimes is painted or gilded on higher end books.

  1. Book cover

  1. The first & last leaves found in a hardbound book.

  1. Fore edge

  1. The portion of the endpaper pasted to the inside of a book’s cover.

Task 3. Answer the questions below (You have 5 minutes for this task).

1. What part of a book do you see when the book is on a shelf and other books are alongside it?

2 . The exterior junction of the covers and spine of a book, also known as the gutter is a tail, isn’t it?

3. Which is true about the cover of a book?

  1. Cover is inside.

  2. Cover is outside.

  3. Cover is in the middle of a book.

  4. Cover is wrapped on a book when we buy it in a store.

4. How does the bottom part of the book is called?

T ask 4. Front matter and back matter of a book consist of several elements. Not all of them are mandatory used in every book. The tables below will help distinguish between some of the different types of front matter and back matter. Read the tables below attentively and answer the following question (You have 15 minutes for this task till 5 minutes brake):

  • In the column “Voice” the creators of different book parts are named. This table was compiled according to how publishing companies work in foreign countries. Compare the information in the table with what you know about the Ukrainian publishing companies:
