§ 2. Модальный глагол “can ”
I can speak two foreign languages.
We can help you.
Tom could swim when he was five.
We could go to the cinema.
Could you give me a glass of water?
They can finish their work next week.
I can lift this suitcase. –
I can’t understand you.
“to be able to” (его еще называют эквивалентом модального глагола “can”).
She is (was, will be) able to come and see us every Sunday.
You can use my telephone. -
You can’t speak to your mother like that.
Can it be true? -
This work can be done at once.
He cannot have done it.
Can she have said it?
5. Когда речь идет о фактически совершившемся действии, употребляется только “to be able to” (was/were able to) со значением «смог, сумел, смогли и т.д.»:
She was able to do it without my help.
They were able to translate the article without a dictionary.
