§ 2. Притяжательные местоимения Possessive pronouns
Притяжательные местоимения выражают принадлежность и отвечают на вопрос чей? Притяжательные местоимения имеют две формы: одну, служащую местоимением-прилагательным (зависимая форма), и другую, служащую местоимением- существительным (абсолютная форма).
Притяжательные местоимения в зависимой форме (my – мой; his – его; her – ее; its – его, ее; our – наш; your – ваш; their - их) стоят перед существительными, к которым они относятся.
He gave me her address. Он дал мне ее адрес.
His elder brother lives in Beijing. Его старший брат живет в Пекине.
После притяжательных местоимений в абсолютной форме (mine - мой, his - его, hers – ее, ours - наш, yours - ваш, theirs - их) существительные никогда не ставятся, так как сами притяжательные местоимения употребляются вместо существительных.
This is not my pencil, mine is blue. Это не мой карандаш, мой – синий.
I don’t like this garden, theirs is much better. Мне не нравится этот сад, их
намного лучше.
Русское притяжательное местоимение свой может относиться ко всем трем лицам единственного и множественного числа. В английском языке нет особой формы притяжательного местоимения, соответствующей русскому местоимению свой, и оно переводится одним из притяжательных местоимений my, his, her, your, their, our, its.
They gave us their magazines. Они дали нам свои журналы.
We have already done our tasks. Мы уже выполнили свои задания.

Exercise 1. Read and translate the sentences paying attention to the use of possessive pronouns.
1. My name should come after yours if the list is alphabetical. 2. Will you share your life with mine? 3. Everything I have is yours. 4. The responsibility is hers. 5. You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours. 6. Jack and Amelia changed my life, just as I changed theirs. 7. "By the way, Catherine sends her love to you and Pete." — Blanche smiled. "And give her ours." 8. Theirs was a true love story. It was a perfect match. 9.1 don't want any partners. I want this business to really be mine. 10. Like most people who keep diaries, Judy usually writes in hers each evening. 11. Is there any place for me in this heart of yours, Susan? 12. The future is yours; don't let them take it from you.
Exercise 2. Choose the correct form of the pronouns in brackets.
1. It may be (our, ours) dictionary. 2. He has not read a line of (your, yours). How can he criticize (your, yours) poems? 3. His composition is much more interesting than (your, yours) or (my, mine). 4. (Their, theirs) knowledge of the subject is not superior to (our, ours). 5. I'm afraid they will take (her, hers) advice not (your, yours), 6. All (our, ours) clothes were extremely dirty, and (my, mine) especially so. 7. Will you help me to sort out the things? I cannot tell which are (your, yours) and which are (my, mine). 8. This is (your, yours) notebook, but where is (my, mine)? 9. She got to (her, hers) feet and took (his, him) hand. 10. "Let me see your passports," I gave him (my, mine) and Catherine got (her, hers) out of (her, hers) handbag. 11. Mind (your, yours) own business and I'll mind (my, mine). 12. The next voice to speak up was not the Lieutenant's but (my, mine). 13. (their, theirs) was not a marriage that could last. 14. His eyes were as bright as (her, hers). 15. This is a square. All (it, its) angles are right.
Exercise 3. Use the appropriate form of possessive pronouns in the following sentences.
1. He patted Jack heartily on (he) shoulder. 2. He put (he) hand in (she). 3. "This foolish wife of (I) thinks I'm a great artist," said he. 4. Then he stopped and pointed and said: "Those are peas." I said, "We've got some peas, too." "I expect (you) are bigger than (our)," he said politely. 5. Don't show this letter to (you) brother. 6. There's a ghastly article of (he) in the evening's paper. 7. She folded the letter and replaced it in (it) envelope. 8. The children had had (they) tea. Kate was late for (she) as usual, Mary and Paul were having (they). 9. This demand of (they) is quite ridiculous. 10. She makes all (she) clothes herself. 11. There was a cold wind blowing so I put on (I) heavy coat. 13. The students completed (they) experiments.
Exercise 4. Translate the sentences from Russian into English.
