2. Make nouns from the verbs.

To know, to understand, to work, to use, to divide, to mix, to improve, to add, to include, to resist, to increase, to machine, to harden, to employ.

3. Replace the highlighted words and expressions with their equivalents from the text.

Model: There are two kinds of engineering materials. - There are two kinds of materials used in engineering.

  1. Nickel steel is a mixture of iron, carbon and nickel.

  2. Chromium can be added to steel to provide a good cutting edge.

  3. There are many kinds of steel used in industry.

  4. Ceramics are used by engineers where heat-resistant materials are needed.

  5. Chromium steels resist corrosion.

4. Using the model explain the expressions and translate them into Ukrainian. Remember the meaning of the suffixes.

-tightconnection is characterized (укр. непроникний)

-proof, -resistant – properties are characterized: secure against (укр. непроникний, стійкий (до)

Model: an air-tight connection – a connection which air cannot pass through

a heat-resistant material – a material which is not damaged by heat

a moisture-proof coating – a coating which moisture cannot pass through

an acid-proof cement – a cement which is not damaged by acid

A gas-tight seal, an oil-proof cement, a water-resistant grease, a light-proof coating, a water-tight connection, a sound-proof engine cladding, a rust-proof surface, a shock-proof mounting, a corrosion-resistant steel, a weather-proof surface.

5. Give the three forms of the verbs:

To have, to know, to use, to find, to learn, to be, to see, to found, to take, to give, to hear, to begin, to supply, to come, to do, to put, to become, to understand, to provide.

6. Read and translate the following sentences. Make them interrogative and negative.

  1. My brother has worked at the factory for 12 years.

  2. Our engineers have improved this new method of work.

  3. They had completed their work by 6 o’clock yesterday.

  4. This plant has developed new types of vehicles such as electromobiles, cars with magnetic suspension and so on.

  5. For years my friend has dreamed of becoming a technical engineer.

7. Put the verbs in brackets in the necessary form.

  1. He (to like) physics and mathematics when he (to be) at school.

  2. Let’s try to answer questions which you (not to ask).

  3. Several famous scientists (to make) reports at the conference yesterday.

  4. I already (to see) this device at the exhibition.

  5. When you (to discuss) this problem with our chief engineer? – We (to discuss) it a few days ago.

  6. Radical changes (to take place) in this country since then.

8. Fill in the gap in the second sentence with passive form of the verb from the first sentence.

  1. This complex has produced many new types of vehicles recently. Many new types of vehicles … at this complex recently.

  2. After the engineer has finally checked the drawings and found them satisfactory, materials are ordered. After the drawings … finally and found satisfactory, materials are ordered.

  3. The scientists have proved that material may exist whose properties are as superior to those of diamond as diamond is superior to carbon. It … by scientists that material may exist whose properties are as superior to those of diamond as diamond is superior to carbon.

  4. Our specialists and representatives of the Renault Company of France have worked out the technological processes of manufacturing the engines. Technological processes of manufacturing the engines … by our specialists and representatives of the Renault Company of France.
