Lesson 2 mathematics – the queen of science

Mathematics is developing swiftly and entering into other sciences. Nowadays no branch of science can do without making use of mathematics.

Karl Friedrich Gauss, the famous 19th century mathematician, once called mathematics “queen of science”. The 20th century method of scientific research in any field is an excellent proof of his words. At present all branches of science depend to some extent on mathematics.

Leaving out mechanics, physics, astronomy where the application of mathematics has been traditional, mathematical methods are now widely used in chemistry, biology, geology, economics and philology.

For example, the recent achievement in biology – genetics, in particular – are closely linked with the progress in mathematics. It would be impossible to decipher the genetic code, the code of heredity, had we not had such terms as coding, transmission of information and so on.

With the development of rapid-acting computer mathematics has become particularly important for scientific progress in general. With this machine it is possible to solve problems which formally could be resolved in theory only, their real solution requiring an abnormal amount of calculation.

Today mathematics closely follows the changes taking place in various field of knowledge, and, in this connection, sets itself definite targets. At the same time scientists in other spheres must be interested in the progress made in mathematics, since it is impossible to keep abreast of the latest development without mathematics.

The importance of mathematics is constantly mounting. Due to mathematics, many important problems of the national economy have been solved and still more are to be solved in the future. Research in cybernetics helped in creating new electronic devices. They solved the problem of automated control in the production processes, in running some enterprises and entire branches of national economy. Effective scientific achievements continue to be introduced into production, thus realizing the scientific and technological revolution wherever possible and necessary.
