A szoftver megszabja a számítógép funkcionális lehetőségeit és a gép felhasználási céljától és területétől függ. A szoftver három fő csoportra osztható: rendszer szoftver, alkalmazási szoftver és fejlesztési rendszerek. A rendszer szoftverek azok, amelyek lehetővé teszik a felhasználónak a számítógéppel való kommunikálását. Az alkalmazási szoftver a programok összeségét fedi, amelyek a felhasználó számára lehetővé teszik a szükséges feladatok elvégzését egy adott szférában. A fejlesztési rendszerek – az új programok létrehozását szolgálják. A rendszer szoftverek között az egyik legfontosabb résztvevőként az operációs rendszer szerepel.
