Non-profit Organizations

1. Charities are non-profit organizations, so profit is not at stake as with other businesses. What is at stake is much more important — survival. Whether they are devoted to finding missing people or helping children, charities need to do all they can to continue their good work and PR can help achieve that, harmoniously.

2. Good PR can work wonders in enhancing fundraising efforts of charities and can help them in overcoming the growing competition. If there is a continuing need for funding, and a specific purpose for the PR activity then redundancy through success is not a situation charities should find themselves in. Charities do not offer donors tangible goods which benefit them directly and there is also vast skepticism over how funds are used and whether they are actually benefiting the cause. It follows that a key role for PR is to communicate to both potential and current donors how donations are being spent and to highlight past successes. By publicizing the information, charities can seek to gain this mutual trust.

3. A charity's status of being in the business of helping people rather than increasing profits can be used to its advantage but that alone is not enough. PR can enhance, broaden and communicate this status, and improve perception. It has been said that "perception is reality." Whether that is true or not, perception is vital to any business, and even more so for charities who heavily rely on their publics for funding. Charities must be cautious when using PR and have a specific purpose for it. The outcome should be sufficient success to achieve

Sponsorship

1. The word 'sponsorship' first entered the English language at the turn of the nineteenth century, when it was used in a novel to describe those called to stand and witness church baptisms. Like so many other words, it has now come to represent something entirely different in the modern world of business and brand promotion - but its impact has been equally uplifting.

2. Clearly, sponsorship and sponsors have moved a long way from the Protestant interpretation nearly 200 years ago. The path was created primarily by a series of 'patrons' who, during the Victorian age, devoted enormous time and resources to supporting causes that set them apart, both as individuals and as business entrepreneurs.

3. One of the most gifted and successful patrons of his illustrious generation was Sir Thomas Lipton, founder of the world-famous tea company that still bears his name. He was also the founder of what remains as the world's most prestigious and famous ocean racing event, now known as the America's Cup (so named after it was won at the first attempt by the American challenger off the Isle of Wight in 1851).

Sir Thomas was a true marketing genius who used his investment in an exciting new event to increase international awareness of his teas and expand the sales of his flourishing domestic grocery store chain. Just think what he might have achieved had his own yacht been successful in the choppy waters of the Solent!

4. Perhaps what Sir Thomas demonstrated most of all was a capacity to measure the level of risk involved (sinking boats and potential loss of life) against the degree of initiative required to deliver his main objective - to put Lipton teas on the map of the world.
