Internal Publics

1. The term “internal publics” refers to staff at all levels, and the company's greatest resource is its people.

2. There is no doubt that effective management-employee relations, which can help to develop a climate of trust, will contribute to overall job performance. The goals of employee communication - or internal PR - are to establish and maintain mutually beneficial relationships between an organization and the employees on whom its success or failure depends. It is clear that the perceptions that staff have of their own organization cannot be left to chance. As employees are also representatives of their organization what they say about their place of work to others and their overall attitudes to it all reflect on the organization itself.

3. It is important to identify whose responsibility internal communications is. For example, both personnel and PR officers have interests in internal communications, although from different perspectives. There may be times, for instance, during industrial action, when they find themselves in conflict. There is no doubt that internal communication is a task of the public relations people but it is one that is shared with other groups, in particular with those staff working in human resources.

4. Internal communication is usually handled through the publication of house journals and newssheets, though the recent introduction of intranet communication is already starting to make a huge and important impact.

Public Relations and Marketing

1. Many people confuse public relations with other functions - like advertising and marketing. Job openings in marketing for «public relations representatives» occasionally turn out to be positions as door-to-door sales representatives or telephone solicitors. In some small organisations, the same person does both public relations and marketing. Because of this some have concluded that there is no difference between marketing and PR. Many people hired into PR jobs spend much of their time supporting marketing, introducing new products and services, publicising their uses, and promoting aspects of the marketing strategy. This doesn't mean PR is marketing.

2. Often confusion arises because public relations practitioners and their clients confuse publicity with public relations. If we look at marketing we'll see that the marketing mix consists of every element in the marketing strategy including - product naming, packaging, research, pricing, selling, distribution and after-sales services. All of these bear some degree of communication and goodwill. It also includes promotion as one of the 4ps - which might also suggest similarities between the two disciplines. Given widespread confusion even in the practice of public relations, it is not surprising that others assume that the purpose of public relations is promoting goods and services to increase sales -«just like marketing».

3. In short don't assume that product publicity, which supports marketing, is the same as PR. If not always clearly defined in practice, public relations and marketing can be distinguished conceptually. Marketing focuses on exchange relationships with customers. PR covers a broad range of relationships with many publics - employees, investors, neighbours, special-interest groups, governments, and many more.
