5.1\ Introduction
In the last decade, well over 100 papers have been published on the use of DWI for rectal cancer imaging. In an increasing number of centres worldwide, a DWI sequence is now routinely included in the rectal MRI protocol, not only for research purposes but also for clinical rectal cancer assessment. The routine use of DWI is also recommended by the expert consensus guidelines from the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR), particularly for restaging of rectal tumours after chemoradiotherapy [1].
