IV. Cities of Kuzbass.
Kemerovo is a centre of Kuzbass. It is located on the river Tom. It was a small village Sheglovka before the revolution. In May of 1918 it became the town. Large enterprises of chemistry, electric, machine-building, food, furniture, light industries are situated here. It has got 5 mines, 1 open pit mine extract. Kemerovo is a town of youth. There are several higher educational institutions and secondary vocational schools and colleges. Among them the State and Technical Universities, the Medical Academy, the State Institute of Arts and Culture and so on. Museums, theatres, different clubs, a concert hall, a circus make the life of Kemerovites more interesting and complete.
Novokuznetsk is the biggest town of Kuzbass. It has got 11 mines, 3 open pit mines, the biggest metallurgical enterprise behind the Urals. There are machine-building and metal treating enterprises, building industry, light and food industries. There are 2 higher educational institutions and a lot of technical secondary schools and colleges. The inhabitants visit their museum and theatres, clubs and a circus with great pleasure.
Prokopievsk is the third in size town in Kuzbass. It is the town of miners. It has got 13 mines, 2 open pit mines and enterprises of mining automatic equipment. There are food factories, a sewing and tobacco factory. This town is famous for its medical research institute and drama theatre.
My Native Place (Kemerovo)
My native town is Kemerovo. I was born here. Besides I’ve been living here all my life. Kemerovo is the main city of Kuzbass, though, of course it’s not as large as the other capitals of our country. The population of Kemerovo is approximately six hundred thousand people.
Our city is a young one. It was founded on the place of the village Sheglovka by name in 1917. And since that time the village has changed beyond recognition.
Nowadays, our city became an industrial, political, educational and cultural centre of Kuzbass. There are a lot of chemical plants and coal mines in it. The river Tom divides the city into two parts. There are two big bridges which connect two parts of the city.
There are five big districts in Kemerovo. But the city becomes bigger and bigger every day and a lot of new houses were built not long ago.
One of the longest streets of our city is Lenin Avenue and the most beautiful street is Vesennya. There are some big cinemas .and parks in Kemerovo. Besides, there is a Circus, the Drama Theatre, the Musical Comedy Theatre, a Puppet Theatre and the others. Of course, for people who are fond of painting there are some picture galleries. Now the place of interest in Kemerovo is the coloured fountain in front of the Drama Theatre.
Kemerovo as an educational centre has the state University, the Polytechnical University, the Medical Academy and other higher educational establishments and colleges. For children there are a lot of nursery schools, kindergartens and different kinds of schools.
As for me, I like my native city very much and I’m proud of it in spite of all problems it has. Thus, they say “There is no place like home”.
