IV. In pairs, read the dialogues aloud.

a)

A: Hello. I’m returning these books.

B: Right. Oh dear. They’re a bit overdue.

A: I know. I was on holiday and I forgot about them.

B: Well, you’ll have to pay a small fine.

A: Alright. How much do I owe?

B: Let me see. Four books ... that’ll be £2.

A: OK. Here you are. And I’d like to take this book out, please.

B: Right. This one is due back on the 27th of this month.

A: Thank you.

b)

Reader:

I’d like to read some books in my leisure time.

Librarian:

And what’s your special taste in fiction?

Reader:

As a matter of fact, I like modern writers best.

Librarian:

Then I would recommend you this novel. It is much spoken about at present.

Reader:

Have you got anything interesting about Africa?

Librarian:

Do you mean fiction, adventure stories or reference books?

Reader:

Adventures, please, if you have any handy.

Librarian:

Here’s one, though I’m not sure it’s really exciting. But, as you know, “tastes differ”.

Reader:

I can’t decide which books to take out.

Librarian:

Perhaps I can help you make your choice.

Reader:

Do you have any books on the Civil War?

Librarian:

Yes, we have several. Here is a good one about military battles.

Reader:

Thank you. I’d like to check it out.

V. Make up your own dialogues on one of the following situations.

  • You’ve just become a student and want to join the library. Ask your fellow student who is a third-year student about the library and how to join it.

  • You’ve come to join the library. Ask the librarian how you can do it, if you have to present any document, how many books you may borrow, etc.

  • You have to write an essay on Shakespeare. Ask the librarian’s advice as to what books you must consult and if they have them in stock.

VI. Are you a bookworm? What do you like reading? What form of books do you prefer: hardcover? paperback? e-book? Give reasons. Think about:

  • cost

  • convenience

  • binding

I prefer reading paperbacks because they are cheap and easy to carry.

VII. Look at the survey results in the table. What do the percentages tell you? Is the printed word dying?

No. of people

who use

electronic media

newspapers

36%

64%

magazines

54%

46%

encyclopaedias

74%

26%

The percentages tell us that more people use electronic media to read newspapers than the printed word.
