III. Reading between the lines.

1. Though he’d worn the white clothing of the clan as a much younger man,

Donnie Cayhall kept his distance from the lines of Klansmen near the front gate

at Parchman.

2. As the big day approached, prisoners were allowed to meet their visitors in the

front office, without a time limit.

3. “Any good news?” Donnie asked, certain of the answer.

4. “He’s staying with Lee in Memphis,” Sam said with pride. Because of him, his

daughter and his grandson had become close.

5. “It would mean a lot if I could die in some nice clothes”.

6. Adam had imagined the picture for days now, and it was time to finally take a

look.

7. He was just a boy, born into a household where hatred of blacks and others was

simply a way of life.

8. “Well, I’d like to know that when I leave this world, all the bad things I’ve done

have been forgiven”.

9. “Killing is always wrong, Sam”.

10. “Life has a new meaning when you’re on death row”.
