TEXT A. IGOR KURCHATOV (1903—1960)
Among our famous atomic scientists the first place belongs by right1

the foundation of the atomic might of Russia. |

.. |
At the same |
time Fermi started to work at splitting |

that when uranium nucleus was split by |

neutrons, |

the Soviet Union. Soviet nuclear physics was |
|||||||
in need of a powerful source of fast particles |

capable |
of |

group of young research workers, with I |
|||||||
Kurchatov at the head, began investigat- |

ing the |
physics |
of |
the nucleus |
of the |
|
|
atom. Their investigations led to a |
striking |
||
discovery |
of fission of |
uranium nucleus. |
|
|
|
I. Kurchatov understood that the neutron was |
the key |
to |
splitting |
||
the atom |
and he put |
all his efforts into neutron |
research. |
In |
1940 I. |
Kurchatov came to the conclusion that slow neutron chain reaction was quite possible. But World War II interrupted his work, and all research programs had to be suspended. During the war I. Kurchatov gave all his energy and knowledge to the strengthening of military might of our Motherland.
In 1949 the Soviet Government announced that the secret of the atom bomb no longer existed and the USA had lost its atomic monopoly.
It was decided that Soviet scientists would continue |
their work in the |
|
field of atom application for peace. |
|
|
On June 27, 1954, the first atomic power plant |
in the |
world was |
put into operation near Moscow. This power generating |
installation |
based on the uranium-graphite reactor was Kurchatov's favourite cre-
ation. Later he was carried away |
by another great idea — to master |
|
controlled thermonuclear reactions |
and he declared that the second half |
|
of the 20th century would be the |
era of thermonuclear |
energy. |
I.V. Kurchatov died in 1960 but his experience and |
his knowledge |
have become immortalized in the world's first atomic power plant,
atom-driven ice-breakers, in Dubna |
Institute and in the broad develop* |
ment of thermonuclear research in |
our country. |

There are two fundamental possibilities of using controlled thermonuclear reaction: magnetic holding plasma and internal holding plasma. At
present, the leading place among the systems of the first type |
is held by |
the Tokamak which was suggested and practically realized by |
the group |
of scientists at the I.V. Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy in Moscow. The Tokamak is a ring-shaped vacuum chamber placed inside a toroidal solenoid. An electrical discharge is produced in the chamber in a
rarefied gas. The magnetic field created |
by the solenoid isolates the |
||
plasma of |
the discharge from the walls of the chamber. The plasma must |
||
be heated |
by the current flowing in it. |
|
|
It took our experts many years until, in 1968, |
it became possible to |
||
heat the hydrogen plasma to a temperature |
of ten |
million degrees on the |
T-3 Tokamak. The whole world believed in the Tokamak. The national programmes of the USA, Japan, France, the FRG, Britain and several other countries were aimed at the use of Tokamak-type systems. Scien- tists are still working on T-15, a special characteristic part of which is the superconductive toroidal solenoid, a prototype of the analogous system of a thermonuclear reactor.
The joint efforts of scientists from different countries have made |l possible to raise the temperature of plasma to 80 million degrees. Sontf experience has been achieved in designing and building whole install4" tions and operating their separate systems.
In 1978 the Soviet |
Union suggested that the |
International Atomic ЬП- |
ergy Agency should link the efforts of countries actively engaged in |
||
monuclear reactor. This |
initiative was supported by |
the Governments of |
176
japan and several West European countries. If the research is success- l^^gjjjand will receive a source of energy with enormous resources of ft^ t0 be found everywhere, including the water of the whole ocean.

IT IS INTERESTING TO KNOW...
...that Alfred Nobel, Swedish chemist and engineer, was known for the invention of dynamite. Everything that he invented served military purposes. He understood how terrible his inventions were, but he easily forgot about them saying: "The things which we develop are terrible indeed, but they are so interesting and so perfect technically that it makes them more attractive."
But one morning, while looking through a French newspaper Nobel read about... his own death. The paper described his inventions as "terrible means of destruction" and he was named "a dynamite king" and "a merchant of death". The thought that his name would always be connected with dynamite and death shook Nobel. He felt he could never be happy again. He decided to use all his money (about 2,000,000 pounds)
for |
some noble purpose. |
|
|
According to his will, prizes |
for "the most outstanding achievements |
in |
physics, chemistry, medicine, |
physiology, literature and fight for peace |
are awarded every year. Nobel prizes have become the highest international scientific awards. Perhaps it's an irony of life that some of Nobel prize winners helped to make the atom bomb.
