After Moscow St Petersburg

is the second largest and one of the

most important cities in Russia. It is also one of the greatest business and

cultural centres.

St. Petersburg was founded in

1703 by Peter the Great, the man of

good intelligence and character. It

was built on the outskirts1 of Russia,

in the delta

of the

river Neva

that

flows into the Gulf of Finland thereby

giving the

country

an

outlet

to Europe.2 Russia became a naval state.

The city began as

a

fortress

and

a port.

. In 1712 the new city, named St. Petersburg, became the capital of

Russia and the whole country began to take part in

its development. The

of the northern capital continued to grow. It

received

the

дачу.

Most people would like to have their holiday in summer. Summer is really the best season for rest and we always look forward to1 it.

People spend their holidays in different ways according to2 their taste. Some don't like crowds of people when they are on their holidays. So they usually go to a small quiet place somewhere on the shore of a sea or on the bank of a river or lake.

Others, just on the contrary,3 like spending their holidays in a good company not to feel alone.

As soon as summer sets in, crowds of people go on a tour about the country from the North to the South, from the West to the East and vice versa. Those who have summer cottages in the country usually go there to rest and do gardening. Forest, sunshine, water to bathe in, that's what they want during their holidays.

Some people travel abroad to see new countries, to meet and make friends with new people. The trips to Greece, Italy, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Malta, Turkey, and some other countries have become very popular. However, some people go to Northern countries, for example, Finland or Sweden to get acquainted5 with the life of our nearest neighbours.

After choosing the kind of holiday you must think how to get to the place of your choice. There are many ways of travelling. You can go by train, by plane, by ship, you can also go on foot or even by helicopter. To my mind,6 one of the most pleasant things in the world is making a journey in a car. You can set out when you like, stop when and where you like, you enjoy the places you were dreaming of.

Tastes differ, so choose for yourself any kind of holiday you like.

NICK: That's right. We had a good company. Some of us were with our

wives.

P.: How did you get there

cars. You see, cheap hotels are very difficult

to find in summer but

we were lucky1 to find a small private one

P.: What was the weather

like?

N.: Wonderful! It was such a pleasure to sunbathe2 on the shore and swim in the Black Sea!

P.: Did you have any entertainments3 there?

N.: Good orchestras came there twice and we went to their concerts. Be-

sides, every Saturday there was a disco in the town hall and we

sometimes went there to dance.

P.: You
