Grammar: degrees of comparison of adjectives and adverbs
Прикметники та прислівники в англійській мові змінюються лише за ступенями порівняння. Вони мають основну форму, вищий ступінь порівняння і найвищий ступінь порівняння.
Проста форма вищого ступеня порівняння утворюється додаванням закінчення -er, а найвищого – закінчення -est.
Прості форми ступенів порівняння мають односкладові та двоскладові прикметники.
thick – thicker – thickest, cold – colder - coldest, quiet – quieter - quietest.
Якщо прикметник закінчується однією приголосною з попереднім коротким голосним звуком, то кінцева приголосна перед закінченням -er, -est подвоюється:
hot – hotter – hottest, big – bigger – biggest, red – redder – reddest.
Якщо прикметник закінчується буквою -y з попередньою приголосною, то перед -er,
-est y змінюється на i :
dirty – dirtier - dirtiest
Складені форми ступенів порівняння утворюються додаванням до прикметника слова more у вищому ступені порівняння і most – у найвищому. Складені форми ступенів порівняння мають усі трискладові (багатоскладові) прикметники, а також прикметники, що закінчуються на –ed, -ful, -ing, -ish, -ous.
Important – more important – most important
Beautiful – more beautiful – most beautiful
Просту форму ступенів порівняння мають тільки декілька прислівників: fast, quick, soon, late всі інші – складену.
Ступені порівняння наступних прикметників і прислівників утворилися від інших коренів. Їх потрібно запам’ятати.
