Завдання для самостійної роботи (ukraine)
Read and dramatize the following dialogues:
What country are you from?
I’m from the USA and Mrs. Hill is from Scotland.
Are you traveling together?
Yes, we are members of a tourist group.
Have you visited many places in Ukraine?
Quite a lot. We have been to Odesa, Kyiv, Kharkiv and the Crimea.
- I’m from England. And what about you? Are you Russian?
- No, I’m Ukrainian. My name is Savchenko.
- Glad to meet you, Mr. Savchenko. By the way I’m going to visit your country soon.
- Really? When?
- Next month. I’ll go by plane to Kyiv and by bus throughout Ukraine.
- That’s fine. I like traveling by bus. One can see more of the country.
- I’m going to see typical Ukrainian villages and large industrial and cultural centers.
I’m going to visit Ukraine. Could you tell me what language is spoken there?
Ukrainian, of course.
I speak Russian a little. Will they understand me?
Yes, they will. Many people in Ukraine know Russian as well.
Thank you.
- You know, John, I’m amazed at the things we’ve just seen. How creative Ukrainian people
are!
Yes, I quite agree. Those beautiful icons, the embroidered clothes and the exquisite wooden
And ceramic objects! They seem to be particularly characteristic of Ukrainian folk art.
And to think that they weren’t made by professionals!
Hm…, yes. Though the objects look different they all have something in common.
Exactly. And that “something”, I think, is the national Ukrainian spirit the people are so proud of.
Actually, they say that the roots of the modern folk art of any country are in its history and national traditions. Do you think that’s true?
Yes, I do. In my opinion, such exhibitions are really inspiring and worth seeing.
- Hi, Nick. Haven’t seen you for ages! Busy revising for an exam?
- No, I have a presentation tomorrow.
- What’s your topic?
- The history of the Ukrainian language.
- That’s really interesting! They say all languages develop like living beings.
- Of course. A language constantly changes and we can see this in literature. If you compare,
say, the language of a modern writer with that of Hryhoriy Skovoroda and Ivan Kotliarevsky you’ll see a striking difference.
Yes. The Ukrainian language kept developing even in those grim years of our history when it was officially banned.
Exactly, but a lot of writers born in Ukraine, for example, Hohol, Bulhakov and Zoshchenko, had to write their literary works in Russian.
But not all of them! The writers and poets wrote in Ukrainian. They lived and worked in Lviv. Among them are Ivan Franko, Vasyl Stefanyk and Iryna Vilde.
Well, I see our interests are very similar. Let’s meet some day and discuss things.
Great. I’d love that. Keep in touch.
