Tracks

Tracking on / off

Tracking On

To activate the tracking function, click the Track on/off button in the Toolbar.

The button appears selected in the Toolbar during all the time the tracking function is activated .

You can also use the shortcut F5 if you have selected it from the [Route] menu.

The track is displayed on the chart and saved .

If several positioning systems are connected, the program can save the track of the different positioning systems (see paragraph bellow Several positioning systems connected ).

No position

The Track on/off and MOB button are not available and appear in grey color. It indicates that MaxSea is in "0 POS" configuration.

Note: if you often remain in tracking mode, the display speed of the chart can be effected due to lack of memory; particularly if the save interval is short. In this case, either the time between saves or periodically save or erase the track .

Tracking Off

Click on the Track on/off button again in the Toolbar to turn off the tracking function.

The program gives you the option to save the track permanently in a "PTF" file on the hard drive (Layer [WGS84] by default).

103

MaxSea Operator Manual version 12.6

Left-clicking on "Save" will save the track in the layer.ptf and clicking on "Do not Save" will loose the save of track.

Left-clicking on "New file" will save the track in a chosen file.

Left-clicking on "Open file" has two effects open an existing file and save the track in it.

Setting GPS Track

To set the GPS track's display and recording:

1.Open the GPS /Track options dialog by selecting [Option: GPS/Track...] from the [Utilities] menu.

2.From the Mobile list, select the COM port on which the GPS is connected,

3.Click the [Track] tab , then choose the parameters for how you want to save and display the track.

Several options can be checked before activating the Track on function:

"Enable track recording" is checked, the track is automatically saved into the active layer (by default or in a specific layer when "Single user file for mobile trails" is checked.)

"Record all input data" is checked any data selected from your wind instruments will be recorded.

Single user file for mobile trails is checked, the GPS track will be recorded in a single file. Each time you will stop Tracking the track will be recorded in the same chosen file.

Recording accuracy

oDefine the precision of your track (i.e. the interval between two saved points) in either time or distance.

oWe would advise a frequency of between 120 and 300 seconds (2 to 5 minutes) which is sufficiently adequate for normal navigation requirements.

Track line options

104

Tracks

There are a series of options with the track. You can have just a basic trail of a fixed color or you can have a trail which varies in color according to the input of specific information from sailing instruments.

oLine width track:Click on the pop-up menu to choose one type of line which stands out on the charts.

ocolor of track: Select the color of your track by clicking on the corresponding pop-up menu, click on the desired color in the box and select, for example, the color red.

oVariable color: You could chose a variable track color in accordance with one of the data sources recognised by the software (e.g. speed of the ship, wind force factor, etc.).

Note: the data sources are dependent upon the electronic equipment installed.

Firstly click on the radio button Variable Color and choose a data under the pop up which then on the pop-up menu of available data to show the list of available data and select the data in accordance to which the color is to be varied (for example, speed).

Using the keyboard select the delimiting speed values by successively selecting text zones (for example, speed of less than 5 knots: blue track; speed exceeding 10 knots: red track; speed between the two: variable color).

Several positioning systems connected

Several positioning systems can be connected depending on your own software version of MaxSea.

In this case, it is possible to choose the type of display and tracking options for each one of them.

One of these connected positioning system is considered to be the master positioning system.

Choosing the master positioning system

To choose the master positioning system, select the menu [Option: GPS/Track...] from the [Utilities] menu and select the required positioning system. Then select from the list on the left-hand window the system you want to choose as the master positioning system.

Note: the name assigned to each positioning system is specified in the Data Input/Output Settings management (see in How to easily… Connect equipments to MaxSea).

Setting the display and tracking options for each positioning system

It is possible to choose the type of display and save the track for the master positioning system and also from all the other connected positioning systems.

When you activate the Track button in the Toolbar, all the "positioning systems" for which track saving is active are tracked.

To set the display type and track save options from the different positioning systems, select [Option: GPS/Track..] from the [Utilities] menu to open the dialog box.

1.Select a Positioning system in the "Select a mobile" list zone in the left part of the dialog box

2.Choose the positioning system that you wish to set options for.

3.Click on the Track tab in the right part of the dialog box.

4.Choose the track saving options, Recording accuracy and the Track line.

5.Click on the Misc tab.

6.Choose the options you wish to display (security circle, directional vectors,....).

Note: repeat this procedure for each one of the connected positioning systems (using the pop-up menu Other system located in the Positioning system in the upper part of the dialog box) in order to set up all of them.

Track Profile

With the MaxSea Professional version, measurements from different sensors (depth, water temperature, etc.) can be recorded for each point of the track .

When a sounder is connected to MaxSea, the measurement from the sounder is recorded for each point of the track.

MaxSea can thus be used to display the bottom profile or the profile of one of the connected sensors (water temperature, etc.).

Toggle the Depth Profile Window On

Click on the Chart Desktop Mode on the Toolbar

Choose to display the Depth Profile window in a chosen mode

The Depth Profile window consist in two parts, the toolbar and its graphical view.

You can display either the profile associated to a previously saved old track, or display the profile of the track which is being recorded.

You will also learn in related topics:

1.How to display the current track in the depth Profile window and follow up its profile outline. Check that no track and no object is selected, then go to the related topic to learn more on the "Depth Profile with the MaxSea Mode selected".

2.How to display a previously saved old track in the Depth Profile window.

To do this activate the check-box Record all input data which is situated in the top right-hand corner of the dialog box.

To change Track into Route

Making a route from a track is a way to re-navigate a previous trip. This function can be used, for example, to transform an old track into a Planning Route and then activating it.

Converting a track into a Route :

1.Surround a complete track on the chart with the Select tool.

2.All points in the track appear selected on the chart as it is shown in pictures below.

3.To change the track into a route, choose [Import selection to Route...] from the [Route] menu.

4.Only extremities points of each straight line are converted to waypoints, the others are not converted because the software can not create more than 100 waypoints at once.

All points in the track are selected on the chart

After converted Track into Route, only waypoints are displayed on the chart. For displaying the route on the chart you may call up the Route Center and select the route named with the"PTF" file name. Then the route appears on screen and it covers up the track. The track is not erased, it is still there, click on the Layers information button to hide it.
