Data Transfer Device

Data Transfer Device Overview

Data such as Routes and Waypoints can be transferred to and from the GPS but data such as marks and tracks can only be downloaded from the GPS. There are several methods for transferring data. The method you use will depend on your GPS model characteristics.

This chapter provides information for:

1.Configuring GPS Upload/Download.

2.Downloading data from GPS.

3.Uploading data to GPS.

4.GPS Transfer Compatibility

In this section an appendix gives details of:

1.N.M.E.A. 183 Data transfer protocol

2.Data transfer protocol for NavNet

3.Data transfer protocol for FURUNO GPS

4.Data transfer protocol for MAGELLAN GPS

5.Data transfer protocol for MLR (FX series) GPS

6.Data transfer protocol for MLR (SP series) GPS

7.Data transfer protocol for MLR (valsat series) GPS

8.Data transfer protocol for NORTHSTAR GPS

9.Warning and Message Error reports

Configuring GPS Upload/Download

This function allows you to manage the data transfer from your computer to the GPS (Upload) or from the GPS to your computer (Download).

Note that the transferring number of waypoints and routes depends on your GPS characteristics.

1.Select [GPS Upload / Download] from the [Route] menu

2.Choose [Configuration...] to call up the dialog box which lets you to choose GPS protocols which are available. However if your GPS protocol doesn't appear in the list , you can choose "NMEA 183" which is supported by most of GPS in input .

3.Click Next to continue.

Note: The first time you use this function, only the "Configuration..." is available in the menu list, the other options are in gray.

79

Next step depends on the chosen data transfer protocol:

NavNet protocol

1.This system uses a network protocol and you have to enter the source name on which you will transfer data. (for example PLOTTER etc...). Get information on available source name in related topic: "Option : Navnet..." .

2.Click Next

3.Parameters report is displayed confirming settings.

4.Click on Finish, Either if parameters are correct or Back to modify them and Cancel to quit.

Related topic: Data transfer protocol for NavNet

Others Protocols

1.Choose the port COM that you wish to use in the list. In case the port COM is not listed by default choose "More..." for displaying all number COM and then click on "detected.." for adding it automatically in the list. If it doesn't appear at all, this means that there is a problem, so refer to the topic of "PROBLEM: Can not open a serial port." and read carefully all instructions described in the troubleshooting.

2.Then Select the Baud Rate under the pop up menu. (To choose the speed of transfer please refer to the characteristics of your GPS).

3.In case your GPS is not compatible with the standard NMEA 183, you have to modify parameters according to the GPS. Click on the "Advanced" button (see Flow control data parameters Chapter )

4.Click Next

5.Either click on Finish if parameters are correct or Back to modify them or Cancel to quit.

After configuring GPS data transfer the options of Downloading or Uploading become available in the "GPS Upload/Download" menu. According to the chosen protocol:

Click "Upload to GPS" for transferring data from personal computer to the GPS.

Click "Download from GPS" for transferring data from the GPS to personal Computer.

Download from GPS

Download protocol consists in transferring data such as Routes and or Waypoints and or Marks and or Tracks from your GPS to your personal computer.

After configuring your GPS data transfer you can access to this function by choosing [Download from GPS] from the

[Route] menu.

A dialog box is displayed and proposes a check boxes list according to GPS possibilities.

Certain GPS only accepts of transferring Routes and others than those of Tracks. In most cases you can download one or several types of data simultaneously according to your choice :

Waypoints

Routes

Marks

80

Data Transfer Device

Tracks

Note:

(1)- According to the GPS protocol, the choice can be done on one or several or totality of data.

(2)- In certain cases, you have to do twice the manipulation. You will be warned when the software is ready for receiving data, at this moment precisely you can configure your GPS in the transmitting mode but you can also cancel depending to your choice.

1.Check each boxes depending on your choice.

2.Click OK to validate

3.An animation is displayed on screen during the transfer action.

4.When the transfer is completed a second dialog of Warning and Message error report appears which lists all eventual errors.

Note : some GPS give more details such as waypoint color and symbol. MaxSea enables to display waypoint's color on the chart but not its symbol icon.

Upload to GPS

The Upload protocol consists in transferring data such as Routes and or Waypoints from your personal computer to your GPS.

After configuring your GPS data transfer you can access to this function by :

1.Choosing [Upload to GPS] from the [GPS Upload/Download] of the [Route] menu.

2.According to GPS Protocol you can choose which type of data you want to transfer.

Two types of data are allowed. Check the data that you wish upload:

1.Waypoints

2.Routes

Notes:

(1)- Upload to GPS option is only available when this function is possible with connected GPS and if you have selected waypoints or routes before.

(2)- only one choice is possible at the same time.

(3)- In certain cases, you have to do twice the manipulation. You will be warned when the software is ready for transferring data, at this moment precisely you can configure your GPS in the reception mode but you can also cancel depending to your choice.

Uploading Routes and waypoints:

They are two kinds of data in a route : routes information and waypoints.

Refer to the GPS characteristics because some of them are limited in transferring data capacity. If the selected route number exceeds this capacity, you will be warned and you will have to cancel this transfer.

The Route name consists for the GPS in its identifier . This name has to respect the GPS characteristics such as length, valid characters...AND EACH NAME MUST BE UNIQUE.

Before transferring data, a dialogue will appear on screen and ask you to verify DATA's format according to your GPS's model. You can then validate or modify the GPS ID according to its protocol.

This can be done for each new GPS protocol or when it is the first time Waypoints or Routes are transmitted.

The name must respect the name format according to characteristics of the GPS.

Note that the FID and GPS name can not be updated, the first one is the unique identify of the software and the other is the GPS identify.

IMPORTANT

Error messages will be displayed:

If no active route is defined, the software warns you that the data transfer is impossible. Draw a route and restart the data transfer process.

A message warns you that the active route will be deleted when the data transfer is activated.

At last a message will warn you that the route stored in your GPS will be replaced by the present active route.

¹) "FURUNO 1722C" is a color GPS model, in this case it is absolutely necessary to specify the color before

transferring data. So This GPS model is incompatible with monochrome GPS model which does not need color parameter. Data color parameter's transfer needs a specific protocol and it is not developed at this time in MaxSea.

TIPS - if your GPS protocol doesn't appear in the list, you can choose "NMEA 183" which is supported by most of GPS.
