COMMON ABBREVIATIONS IN PRESCRIPTION

CHEMICAL COMBINING FORMS

Making out prescriptions doctors use universally accepted abbreviations. We abbreviate names of drug forms, parts of plants and standard prescription formulas. These abbreviations contain, as a rule, from one to three initial letters of the word, e.g.: hb. – herba; liq. – liquor, M. – Misce.

If the word is abbreviated on a syllable containing several consonants, they are all preserved: extr. – extractum; ung. – unguentum.

Names of drugs or plants should not be abbreviated!

Memorise the spelling and meaning of some chemical combining forms: Phthor- (Greek phthoros – destruction) shows the presence of fluorine compounds: Phthoracizinum, Phthorothanum.

226

Thi- (Greek theion – sulfur) shows the presence of a substituting sulfur atom:

Thiaminum, Thiopentalum, Thiophosphamidum.

-az-, -zol-, -(a)zin-, -(a)zid- (from azot in Greek: a – negation, zoon – life)

shows the presence of nitrogen or nitrogen group: Corazolum, Aminazinum, Saluzidum.

NOTE 1. In some drug names the syllables that sound like zin, zol are of a different origin and so are spelt with an s, e.g.: Anaesthesinum, Chinosolum, Aёrosolum, Anusolum.

NOTE 2. The suffix -as- is used in names of enzymes: Lidasum, Ribonucleasum, Cocarboxylasum.
