Docking Operations

PROCEDURE:
(1)Pilotage Is compulsory in Panama Canal waters, including the ports of BALBOA and CRISTOBAL
(2)Vessels should obtain permission before any movement in or out of harbour, including arrival or departure, and when shifting berths.
(3)Vessels are also required to contact the watch supervisor at Marine Traffic Control (MTC) through the appropriate Signal Station or telephone: +507 2724201 before initiating any authorised movement.
(4)Vessels should follow any instructions given by the watch supervisor and maintain a listening watch on VHF Ch 12 to receive any further instructions while manoeuvring.
(5)Pilot boards as follows:
(a)Entering from the Pacific: In the Merchant Ship Anchorage (seaward of Lt buoys No 1and No 2).
(b)Entering from the Atlantic: Inside the breakwaters (N of Mole Bn) or outside the breakwaters (on request).

(5)Vessels approaching the Canal should report to Transtl Operations Division:
(a)Entering from Pacific: when passing the latitude of Cabo Mala (7°2B'·00N BO'OO'·OOWapprox), stating time and vessel'sspeed
(b)Entering from Atlantic: 12h before arrival at Cristobal if there has been achange in ETA of 1hor more.
(c)Any other maners of importance and interest.
(S) Vessels arriving or departing the Atlantic or Pacific Anchorages are required to contact the Port Entry Co-ordinator (PEC) in the corresponding Signal Station on VHF Ch 12. The Port Entry Co-ordinator (PEC) should contact vessels when they are 5 n miies off the breakwater, if such vessels have not previously called to determine their intentions.
(7) The following vessels should advise the Traffic Management Unit when ready for canai transit:
(a)All power-driven vessels of 300 GT or over
(b)All power-driven vessels of 100 GT or over carrying one or more passengers
(c)All commercial towing vessels of 2S feet In length or over
These vessels should maintain a continuous listening watch on VHF Chs 12 and IS until Canai piiot boards (VHF Ch 12 is used to advise vessels of their transtl time and, at Atlantic Entrance, for advisory traffic control in Limon Bay).
(B) Vessels underway in Canal waters should maintain a continuous listening watch on VHF Ch 13 for bridgEHo-bridge navigational communications. While Canal pilot is on board, VHF Ch 13 may only be used by the piiot or at his direction, solely for navigationai communications. All communications between the Signal Station and vessels should be in English.
(9)During transit, the radio should only be used for routine VHF bridge-to-bridge communications or for emergency traffic.
(10)Wijhin Canai waters, vessels should report to the Traffic Management Untl in the event of:
(a)Any accident or other Incident which may cause delay or require assistance
(b)Discovery of any defect that may Interfere wtlh safe navigation
(c)Anchoring or mooring when visibiitly falls below 1000 feet
NOTE:
All vessels over 300 GT or over 20m LOA must be equipped wtlh functional AIS equipment. Vessels not equipped wtlh such equipment must rent portable AIS untls from the Canal Authority.
