General questions for story analysis and interpretation.
1. What does the title contribute to the understanding you have of the meaning of the story? Are the first and last sentences of the story (considering the prominence of such positions ) significant clues to the meaning?
2. What kind of people are the characters? How do you know?
3. What is their motivation? How do you know?
4. Are they believable in the context of the story s world? Why?
5. How are the episodes of the action related to one another? What is the conflict or problem? How are the opposing forces creating the tension? What change takes place in the story? Are there both external and internal changes? Exactly at what point does the climax occur?
6. What is the theme? How does it emerge? Is it stated or implied?
7. From whose point of view is the story narrated? What does point of view have to do with character, action, and theme?
8. How do imagery, symbolism, and irony contribute to the whole effect of the story?
