Text b. Students’ Union Society
The Student’s Union of the University college in Cardiff was established over 60 years ago to represent the interests of its members, with changes in the Education system. The Union is now able to offer its members as well as representation in the college decision-making process, a wide range of amenities and services. Every student becomes a member of the Students’ Society and is entitled to make use of all the facilities as well as to influence union policy through general meetings.
There are over 120 societies that were set up by members and every encouragement is given to the formation of new ones. Societies can make use of minibuses, printing facilities, rooms.
Many students face difficulties with bureaucratic nature of society. Legal and accommodation problems are dealt with by the Welfare Office. Certain groups of students have specific problems, overseas students are helped with the immigration regulations and, for mature students, to run a nursery and a playgroup.
The Union Travel Office provided a reliable service that allowed students to take advantage of cut-price fares.
There are seven bars in the building of the Students’ Union, three TV rooms, a dark room and various other minor amenities. On the ground floor there is a student-run second-hand bookshop, a bank, an insurance office, and the University bookshop.
