Text 2 Before and When You Arrive at uea

1. It is advisable to sort out a Student bank account before you arrive, otherwise you could find yourself without any money whilst you wait for an account to be started. Until your account is set up you cannot cash your grant and other cheques. All the major banks are represented on campus.

2. Make sure that you have sorted out the details of your grant and ensure that you are receiving the full amount to which you are entitled. Bring with you any relevant documents – either the originals of copies, in case there are any problems about your funding. This is important since you cannot register in your school until they know where your fees are coming from.

3. At the start of every term throughout your University career you are required to register in your school of study as well as registering in any other schools where you might be taking courses. The registration system is very simple and is nothing to worry about.

4. Insurance is vital as UEA is an open campus and things tend to wander if not nailed down. There are many companies providing special services for students and it is worth shopping around for the deal that best suits you and your pocket.

5. All students can bring cars, motorcycles and bicycles to the University. Cars and motorcycles must be registered with the University authorities and kept in specified areas; in the case of cars this is in the main car park only. Shelters are provided for bicycles and motorcycles and it is important that you bring a secure chain and lock to protect them from theft. Parking out of authorised areas will result in a large fine and/or wheel clamping.

6. The University has a very good health Centre and all students are required to register with one of the doctors. Ensure that, if you are a resident of the United Kingdom, you bring your health card and national health number with you. The health centre is a general practice staffed by several doctors and nurses; it also has a dental surgery which operates at certain times. The centre also provides advice on a wide range of medical problems and needs.

7. Most floors have an ironing board and iron; the irons are not surperb so if you have your own it is advisable to bring it. Most floors have a drying room where clothes can be hand washed and dried. There are launderettes on campus, providing washing and drying facilities.

8. All residents are self-catering; each floor has its own kitchen. The kitchens are equipped with electric cookers, grills and hobs and varying sizes of fridge freezers. Each kitchen is also fitted with a water boiler for providing hot water to make tea, coffer etc. Each person also has his or her own food locker in the kitchen.
