13 Look at the picture. Write everything that you’ve known about wedding superstitions in your own country and other countries of the world and explain their origin.

E xample: Carrying the bride over the threshold for protecting the bride from evil spirits that were thought to be lying in wait under the threshold (the first explanation). The second explanation relates to the Roman times when it was believed that if the bride stumbled when entering the newlywed's home for the first time, it would bring bad luck and harm to their marriage. So carrying the bride across the threshold prevents this from happening. A lot of people believe in this wedding superstition all over the world. Не поняла

PAST PERFECT

had + participle II

We use the Past Perfect to denote an action completed before a certain moment in the past.

When Sarah arrived at the party, Paul had already gone home.

He had finished his work by 5 o’clock yesterday.

The Past Perfect is not used to denote a succession of actions. In this case the Past Indefinite is used.

He got up, went to the bathroom, had breakfast and left for work.

The Past Perfect is used with the conjunctions:

Hardly...

+ Past Perfect... + when + Past Indefinite

Scarcely...

Nearly...

Barely...

No sooner

+ Past Perfect... + than + Past Indefinite

He had hardly done it when they came. (Hardly had he done it when they came).

No sooner they had arrived than it started to rain. (No sooner had they arrived than it started to rain)
