V. Вводный член предложения.

В этой функции инфинитив является частью инфинитивной фразы и всегда выделяется запятой. Обычно фраза передается на русский язык деепричастным оборотом (что делая?) или инфинитивной фразой с союзом если.

e.g. To say in general, your method is not new.

Вообще говоря (Если выразиться в общем), ваш метод не нов.

Инфинитив в этой функции чаще всего представляет собой устойчивое словосочетание, значение которого даётся в словаре. Наиболее часто употребляются следующие:

to anticipate – забегая вперед

to begin with – прежде всего; начнем с того, что; для начала

to enumerate – если перечислить

to generalize – обобщая, если обобщить

to judge from – судя по, если судить по

to make a long story short – короче говоря

to mention – если упомянуть

not to mention – не упоминая

to name – если назвать (упомянуть)

to put it another way – иначе говоря, иными словами

to put it briefly – короче говоря

to put it mildly – мягко выражаясь

to put it more exactly – точнее говоря

to put it simply – попросту говоря

to quote – если привести, приведём

to return – возвращаясь, если возвратиться

to say nothing of – не говоря уже о

needless to say – не имеет смысла говорить, нет смысла

suffice to say – достаточно сказать

so to say – так сказать

to sum up, to conclude – подводя итог, если подвести итог, в заключение

to tell the truth – по правде говоря

to take an example – если привести пример, например

to use – если употребить, употребляя

Упражнение 1. Переведите следующие предложения на русский язык, обращая внимание на инфинитив в функции вводного члена предложения:

1.То be sure, being able to keep up a conversation helps to get along with people. 2. His manner of talking was tactless, to say the least of it. He kept mentioning subjects unpleasant to his trends. 3.To put it mildly, he is not the best speaker: his voice is low and he speaks too fast to be understood. 4. To begin with, children should be taught how to speak to each other and to their elders. 5.To speak frankly, I don’t like people who hear only themselves. 6. Their invention is of great scientific value, to say nothing of its possible economic effect.7. To put it another way, inven­tions appear at times when societies need them. 8.To avoid making mistakes is difficult, because, to begin with, to err is human. 9.To put it briefly, this work must be done.10. To tell the truth, we expected quite different results of this experiment 11.To put it simply, special devices allow the whole system to function automatically.

Упражнение 2. Переведите предложения, подобрав в списке соответствующие сочетания с инфинитивом.

1. A great household (such as Shakespeare depicts in Twelfth Night or Lear) might consist of several hundred persons — family, dependants, expert officials — to say nothing of the scores of guests and neighbours.

2.To return to our play, it is evident that «Phedre» is the ideal type of a baroque tragedy, not only by its style, but by its basic conception.

3.To begin with, the concept of related languages was strikingly confirmed by the existence in far-off India, of a sister of the familiar languages of Europe (Sanscrit).
