3.The comparison of adjectives
We use the comparative (сравнительная степень)when comparing one person or thing with another.
We use the superlative(превосходная степень) when comparing one person or thing with more than one.

4. Comparative and superlative forms often confused:
1 FARTHER —FURTHER
FARTHER refer to distance: London is five miles farther. FURTHER means "in addition": There is no further information.
2. ELDER— OLDER
ELDER ONLY before a nouns only with reference to people in a family. NEVER used in the COMPARATIVE construction :
my elder brother/son, the eldest child,
OLDER in the COMPARATIVE construction
: □ He is older than I am.
This book is older.
3. LESS-LESSER
LESS — the COMPARATIVE form of LITTLE
LESSER is formed from less but is not a true comparative. We cannot say lesser than after it.
Lesser means "not so great" and we use it in fixed phrases like: the lesser of two evils.
4. LATEST — THE LAST
LATEST (последний = недавний)
I bought the latest (i.e. most recent) edition of this magazine. We will get the next one in a month.
Я купила последний выпуск этого журнала. Следующий будет через месяц..
LAST — последний по очереди;
I bought the last (i.e. final) edition of today's paper. None of them are left
Я купила последнюю газету из это тиража. Больше не осталось.
The most — a most — most—most of
THE MOST (самый) is used just in the SUPERLATIVE FORM.
This is the most interesting book.
A MOST (крайне. весьма)
This is a most interesting book.— Это весьма интересная книга;
These are most interesting books.— Это весьма интересные книги;
MOST(большинство)
Most young people are fond of sports— Большинство молодых людей увлекаются спортом.
Most of my friends live in Moscow.— Большая часть моих друзей живут в Москве.
5. Прилагательные в сравнительной степени superior высший, выше, лучший, лучше (по качеству) и inferior худший, хуже (по качеству) заимствованы из латинского языка. Они оканчиваются на -or, а не на -ег и после них употребляется to вместо than. Они не употребляются ни в положительной, ни в превосходной степени:
These samples are superior (inferior) to those-— Эти образцы по качеству лучше. (хуже) тех образцов.
6. Сравнительная степень может быть усилена употреблением перед нею a lot, much или far со значением гораздо, значительно:
The Dnieper is much(a lot) longer than the Thames. — Днепр—гораздо (значительно) длиннее Темзы.
This book is far better than that one.——— Эта книга значительно (гораздо) лучше той.
7. Превосходная степень может быть усилена употреблением перед нею by far или far:
The deposits of oil in Russia are by far the richest in the world—
Залежи нефти в России самые-самые богатые в мире.
8. Для выражения меньшей или самой низкой степени качества в предмете по сравнению с другими предметами употребляются соответственно слова less менее и least наименее,
pleasant— less pleasant — least pleasant;
comfortable — less comfortable — least comfortable
9. Для сравнения двух предметов одинакового качества прилагательное в положительной степени ставится между as ... as со значением такой же ... как, так же ■.. как:
Не is as young as my brother. —Он такой же молодой (так же молод), как мой брат.
My dictionary is as good as — Мой словарь такой же хороший yours, как ваш.
В отрицательных предложениях первое as обычно заменяется so:
Не is not so young as my broth- Он не так молод, как мой брат.
My dictionary is not so good as yours.— Мой словарь не такой хороший, как ваш.
10. Как одно явление зависит от другого мы используем сравнительную структуру the ... the — чем... тем
What time shall we leave?— The sooner the better.
Когда мы уедем? — Чем скорее, тем лучше.
The warmer the weather the better I feel.— Чем теплее погода, тем лучше я себя чувствую.
11. Русская сравнительная степень после выражений в два раза, в три раза и т. д. передается в английском языке прилагательным в положительной степени, стоящим между as ... as:
Ваша комната в два раза больше моей-— Your room is twice as large as mine.
Этот ящик в три раза тяжелее того.. — This box is three times as heavy as that.
У него в два раза больше книг, чем у меня.—Не has twice as many books as I.
Следует обратить внимание на перевод следующих выражений:
Я заплатил за книгу в два раза меньше, чем за словарь—I paid for the book half as much as for the dictionary.
У меня в два раза меньше английских книг, чем французских.— I have half as many English books as French.
Он в два раза моложе меня. Не Is half my age.
Моя комната в два раза меньше вашей.—- My room is half the size of yours.
Мой чемодан в два раза легче вашего.— My trunk is half the weight of yours.
