The United States of America
Do you know?
The USA consists of three separate parts. They are the Hawaiian Islands, situated in the central part of the Pacific Ocean, Alaska separated by the Canadian territory and the rest major part of the USA.
There are two main political parties in the USA: the Democratic and the Republican. The US President is both head of state and government. He is elected for a four-year term. Franklin D. Roosevelt was the only president who was elected four times.
In 1790 the US Congress decided to build a capital on the Potomac River. President Washington selected the area which was named the District of Columbia after Christopher Columbus. Washington is like no other city in the world; its population is a little over 600,000 people. Its only industry is government. There are the White House, where the US president lives and works the Capitol, the home of the US Congress and the Supreme Court.
Martin Luther King, a man of peace, is acknowledged as an American hero. He believed that blacks could win their struggle for equal rights without violence.
Fact File
It has 50 states and one Federal District – the District of Columbia. The largest state Alaska and Hawaii were the last to join the USA in 1959.
In 1492 Christopher Columbus ‘discovered’ America. He arrived in the Bahamas on the 12th of October 1492.
The American flag is often called the “Stars and Stripes”. It has 13 stripes and 50 stars, one for each state. Every true American waves the flag on July 4th. This is the day when Americans remember the beginnings of their nation.
Thanksgiving Day is a public holiday; it now comes on the fourth Thursday in November. Every true American sits at the family table and eats turkey on this day. This is when they thank God for the good things in their lives, and remember the courage of the first Europeans who landed in America.
The “Big Apple”, as New York City is nicknamed, is a city unlike any other. The Statue of Liberty was France’s gift to America. It was designed by the
French sculptor Bartholdi and presented to the USA in 1886.
It’s interesting
The Freedom Tower will replace the World Trade Centre which was destroyed in the attack of September 11, 2001. It will be 541.4 metres tall and might become the tallest building in the world. The tower will have 70 stories and an 84-metre spire which is meant to echo the Statue of Liberty.
A President has to make his job look easy, and smile confidently when he speaks to the nation on TV. Americans like him to be good-looking, religious, and a good family man. They want him to be strong, to be a good talker, and to be confident about the future.
Whatever the reason, Americans love to invite people to their homes, and they work hard to make their houses look good and their food taste delicious. Is it President’s Day in February? There will be cherry pie for everyone.
Canada
Do you know?
On July 1st Canada celebrated its national holiday – Canada Day.
Canada is the world's second largest country by total area, and shares land borders with the United States to the south and northwest.
At present Canada is a federation of 10 provinces and 3 northern territories.
It is a constitutional monarchy with Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, as head of state. The federal Parliament is made up of the House of Commons and the Senate.
Canada’s flag is the red and white single maple leaf.
Believe it or not
Canada has about 2 million lakes; the most well-known are Huron, Great Bear, Superior, Great Slave, Winnipeg, Erie and Ontario. The Horseshoe Falls in Niagara Falls, Ontario, one of the world's most voluminous waterfalls, is a major source of hydroelectric power, and a tourist destination.
Ottawa has been called the Tulip City, because every spring the city comes alive with thousands of tulips from the Netherlands. Juliana, Queen of Netherlands, started sending 15,000 tulips a year to Ottawa in 1946 as a way of thanking the Canadian people for the time she spent in Canada with her daughters during World War II.
In 1999, Canada’s Inuit were given their own territory called Nunavut. It’s huge but extremely cold. The Inuit have lived in the frozen region of tundra, icy lakes and Arctic islands for thousand of years. Their ancestors came here from Siberia perhaps 30,000 years ago. The Inuit used to be called ‘Eskimos’, which means ‘eaters of raw meat’, but they prefer ‘Inuit’ because it means ‘the people’.
They called their new territory Nunavut because it means ‘our land’ in Inuktitut, their language. A snow house built by the Inuit (Eskimos) is called an igloo. Now the Inuit live in houses but they still make igloos when they go hunting.
About 29,500 Inuit live in Nunavut today.
