Британський Музей
Назва "Британський Музей" мoжe ввести в оману: музей? Чого? Так, це музей, але і одна з і найвизначніших бібліотек у світі, яка непомітно приховується під поняттям "читальна зала".
Британський музей - це найкраще місце, з якого можна починати знайомство з Лондоном. Багато визначних людей користувались гостинністю та скарбами бібліотеки.
Ви підходите до Британського музею. За високою огорожею відкривається велична споруда в стилі класичної архітектури. Зовнішній вигляд будинку, його строгі форми ніби вводять вас у світ стародавньої Греції, класичного Сходу.
Через просторий вестибюль ви потрапляєте в читальну залу (звичайно, якщо ви своєчасно отримали квиток на право користування бібліотекою). Це велика, дуже висока кругла зала з куполом, побудована в 1857 році. Світло вливається через вікна, які знаходяться на рівні другого поверха. До вікон другого поверха навколо всієї зали знаходяться стелажі, від них до центру тягнуться не дуже довгі столи, де все пристосовано до роботи: світло, підставки для книжок. Кожне місце позначене буквою та номером.
В центрі зали розміщені півкругом бар'єри для обслуговування читачів, каталоги. Через 10-15 хвилин, після того, як книга виписана, її принесуть вам на місце. В бібліотеці музею 6 мільйонів книг, але вона відома не тільки книгами - тут знаходиться величезне сховище рукописів: англійська хроніка, автографи великих письменників, музичні партитури, грецькі та латинські рукописи, більше двох тисяч єгипетських папірусів.
Безцінні скарби, зберігаються у відділі східних книг і рукописів: стародавні тексти Біблії, новинки літератури на східних мовах. Журнальна зала одержує періодику з усіх куточків земної кулі. А перші видання Шекспіра, а численні інкунабули (перші друковані книги), а Магна Карта (Велика Хартія Вольностей 1215 р.)!
Велике враження справляє сам музей. Рим, стародавня Греція, Єгипет, Ва вілон представлені багатьма пам'ятками. В Британському музеї знаходиться камінь із чорного базальта, на якому збереглись написи єгипетською та грецькою мовами. Розшифрування написів французьким єгиптологом Шампольйоном поклало початок нової ери в археології та історії.
Зала мумій, етнографічний відділ, далекосхідне мистецтво - скарби музею незчисленні, як і сама історія людства.
