Нет никакой национальной системы высшего образования в Соединенных Штатах. Высшее образование дано в колледжах и университетах. Есть более чем 2100 различных институтов, включая колледжи, технологические институты и университеты. Средний курс колледжа исследования составляет 4 года. Учебный год обычно является 9 месяцами или 2 условиями (семестры) четырех с половиной месяцев каждый. Классы обычно начинаются в сентябре и конец в июне. Студентов первого курса называют новичками.

Студенты выбирают основной предмет (профилирующий предмет, дисциплина) и берут много курсов в этом предмете. После четырех лет они получают традиционную Степень бакалавра. Тогда студенты могут продолжить в аспирантуру (старшие курсы) и с годом, или два из дальнейшего исследования получают Степень магистра.

После другого года или двух из исследования и исследования, они могут получить еще более высокую степень как Доктор Философии (доктор философии). Успех студента оценен посредством тестов, работ термина и выпускных экзаменов в каждом курсе. Работе студента дают марку, обычно в масштабе на пять пунктов (5-балльная система). Письма указывают на уровень достижения. «A» является самой высокой маркой. «F» обозначает отказ.

Большинство американских колледжей и университетов взимают за обучение. Методы инструкции в университетах являются лекциями, обсуждениями, лабораторией и курсовыми работами и семинарами.

У большинства городов есть колледжи или университеты, которые держат классы ночью так же как в дневном времени. Таким образом люди могут работать на степень или просто взять курс в предмете, который интересует их.

Dear Sergei,

How are you? I have received your letter of 10-th June for which I thank you very much. I am sorry I haven't written to you sooner, but I have had many things to do. You know it was a very hard year for me. I spent my time getting ready for my exams and I was doing well in many subjects. After passing the exams I was enroled into the University. The whole course of study is four years. My major subject is mathematics. It is my favourite and my hobby. I am good at it and do maths whenever I have a chance. I take many courses in this subject. I like to take part in mathemati­cal competitions organized at our department and at the Univer­sity. I think that mathematics is «the language of science» and plays an important part in many sciences. We are lucky to have a brilliant lecturer in mathematics this term. He has a talent to take a difficult subject and make it simple. You leave the lecture hall with a feeling that mathematics is the most interesting subject under the sun. Next term I'll do research in the field of computer engineering.

Вы знаете, что это был очень трудный год для меня. Я провел свое время, готовясь к моим экзаменам, и я преуспевал во многих предметах. После сдавания экзаменов я был зарегистрирован в университет. Целый курс исследования составляет четыре года. Моим основным предметом является математика. Это - мой фаворит и мое хобби. Я способен к нему, и сделайте математику всякий раз, когда у меня есть шанс. Я беру много курсов в этом предмете. Мне нравится принимать участие в математических соревнованиях, организованных в нашем отделе и в университете. Я думаю, что математика является «языком науки» и играет важную роль во многих науках. Мы удачливы иметь блестящего лектора в математике этот термин. У него есть талант взять трудный предмет и сделать его простым. Вы покидаете лекционный зал с чувством, что математика является самым интересным предметом под солнцем. Следующий срок я проведу исследование в области вычислительной техники.

Education

Most Americans start to school at the age of five when they en­ter kindergarten. Children do not really study at this time. They only attend for half the day and learn what school is like. Children attend elementary school for next six years. They learn to read and write and work with numbers. They also study the world and its people. After they leave elementary school, children go to junior high school for three years and senior high school for another three years. This is called secondary education. In some places the chil­dren go to elementary school for eight years and high school for four. At any rate, elementary and secondary education together take twelve years to complete excluding kindergarten.

In their secondary schooling children get more advanced knowledge and begin to concentrate on their special interests. They usually study further in history, geography, government and Eng­lish language and literature.

They may choose to study foreign languages, advanced mathe­matics or science, such as physics or chemistry. Students who plan to go on to college or professional training must take some of these courses in order to enter college. Other students who do not intend to go on with school may take classes in accounting or typing or other subjects that will help them in the business world. Some se­nior high schools are vocational. Boys may learn to operate ma­chines or do other work. Girls may learn cooking, sewing or office work. High schools have athletic teams which play against teams from other schools. Many boys enjoy playing football, basketball or baseball. These games take place after school hours. Girls are given physical education too, but they do not usually play teams from an­other schools.

In the most places in the US children must attend school until they are sixteen, or until they finish high school, usually at the age of seventeen or eighteen. Some children who are not good students drop out of school at the age of sixteen. This is a growing problem, for it is harder and harder for people to find work when they have not finished their high school education.

Public schools are free for all boys and girls, but some parents prefer to send their children to private schools. Some private schools are connected with churches and children receive religious instruction as well as their regular studies. Other private schools are not religious, but have small classes and very good teachers so that the parents think their children will get a better education there than in the larger classes of the public schools. The private schools do not receive any tax money, so most of them must charge the stu­dents several hundred dollars a year to pay for the cost of the school. Boys and girls attend the public schools together, but many private schools are for girls only or for boys only.
