Употребление артикля (Usage of Articles)
Артикль – служебная часть речи, являющая основным определением существительного. Неопределенный артикль a употребляется только с исчисляемыми существительными в единственном числе, когда впервые упоминается о предмете, указывается качество какой-либо вещи, человека: a nice table, a good driver; it is a book; род деятельности, выделяя среди множества: She is a nurse. Если имя существительное начинается с гласного звука, то употребляется форма артикля an.
Определенный артикль употребляется как в единственном, так и во множественном числе с исчисляемыми, а также неисчисляемыми существительными, когда речь идет именно о данном, известном говорящему, предмете (предметах): The pen’s black. The tea is hot; когда понятна ситуация: Turn on the light; предмет является единственным: the sun, the moon и т.д.; в устойчивых сочетаниях: go to the cinema, play the piano, а также с названиями океанов, морей, рек, горных цепей, каналов, музеев, театров, кино, названиями газет, организаций и т.д.: the Palace Theatre, the White House; с названиями некоторых стран: the United Kingdom (the UK), the United States of America (the USA).
Артикль не употребляется с неисчисляемыми существительными: There is some milk in the cup; с названиями отдельных гор, стран, городов, улиц, парков, озер, важных сооружений: аэропортов, вокзалов, университетов: Harvard University, Lake Baikal, когда говорим в общем о предметах, людях, животных и т.д.: I’m afraid of dogs. В устойчивых сочетаниях: to go home, to play football.
